In the Pocketwatch version, the fill Grohl does at about 3:16 is ORGASMIC and literally impossible to play :D

I'm not sure if Taylor played drums on the B-side version, but that awesome fill is missing... BUT the last 20 seconds make up for it completely!!

One of my favorite tunes :)

Dave played the drums on the b-side version. Taylor has never played it live. Once in '97 or '98, someone yelled for Winnebago, and Dave started jamming on it. Nate joined in, but Taylor and Franz had no clue. Dave stopped it and said something like, "sorry, we don't remember that one."

They stopped playing the full version around late summer/early fall in 1995, but here's a video of the full version.

Yeah I remember listening to that show. Can't remember which one though. :p

I do remember something funny regarding Winnebago though. Back in 1996 they played a show on April Fools Day. The second song on the setlist was This Is A Call, which Dave obviously starts on his own. However when he got to the part where the rest of the band kick in, they all played Winnebago instead to throw him of as an April fools. Dave wasn't amused, but it was funny.

Last time they must've played it live was the last show of the tour in 1996 at Phoenix Festival, unless they played it at any of the secret shows we don't know the setlist for, like Taylors first and second show, but I doubt it.

One of my favourite foo songs. The drumming on the pocketwatch version is unbelievably good, as was THAT fill. I've been trying to master it for years. By the way the link in my sig no longer works but I had a damn good go at drumming it like the Grohl. I'll try and reupload someday

I remember listening to your cover when it was online and thinking it was excellent. Please do reupload it. :)

No, I heard the story second-hand.

I'll seriously sign a petition for that. I remember hearing a 30 second Real Audio clip of it awhile back and then picking up the TIAC single and being so excited to hear it, and then listening to it over and over.

I was listening to this the other day and would love to see it come back, perhaps like they did in the early days mixed with Watershed.

I personally prefer the drums on the B-Side version, I just love the freestyle fills towards the end. I wish I was a good enough drummer to do that.

The time someone yelled for it was Lupos, 1998. The "Damn You Damn Everyone" show

I was there. I miss that club

But I don't miss Winnebago

It's nice and all, but I can not think of an old song I'd be less excited to hear them dust off...Maybe X-Static? But that's only cause X-Static kinda sucked live when they tried it

Yeah? In what way was he not amused? What was his response?

X-Static is a great song! That and Good Grief are two songs off that album which to me were particularly memorable. And yeah you're right about it kinda being bad live, but I think they could fix that up...after all these years of being frikkin gods of music haha

WOW. I had not heard that clip before, but that was hysterical. Best part: only a handful of people in the audience would have had any idea what was going on (I doubt too many people there had heard "Winnebago" before).

Dave gets kinda faux-pissed - he knows they got him. "STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP. That's a nasty fuckin' April fools joke. You guys... god damn it. (To audience) Should I try it again? Fuckers. They planned that, too. Assholes."

I'm sure they had. Winnebago had aired on MTV live for the I'm OK/Eur-OK special, and, at least in Seattle, it got a fair bit of radio play. At the show I went to in '96, when Dave said, "This song's called Winnebago," the crowd started cheering -- as they did at most live shows in '95 and '96.

Ah, good story. Thanks for that.

I listened to Winnebago for the first time in years yesterday, what a great song.

That's anecotal, though - it didn't get much airplay anywhere else. Die-hard fans knew it - most general fans didn't. At this particular show, there only a modest reaction when "Winnebago" is announced (notable exception of the dude near the recording letting out a massive "YEAH!").

And, honestly, the real reason that no one would have known what was going on is that the songs are close enough at that point that it just sounds like an amped version of "This Is a Call" until it reaches the G chord (which is around the point that you can hear Dave realize what's happening).
