In light of that, one comment I found interesting -- before the video was removed -- was the claim that Dave was sometimes perfectly happy with the drums, but that Gil Norton would have none of it.

I dunno......if the actual "final" versions were like the demos, I'd be shocked if Dave was 100% satisfied with that. With the benefit of hearing the finished versions and a million live versions with small variations, it's really hard to listen to those ones and not think something's just missing on the drums.

While it's gone on YT I have the original "videos" in high & low res flv and mp4. The hi flv is the largest in size, but I'm fairly certain the audio is much the same.

The audio mix levels are very muted on the original two demo tracks, and the recoding level was way too high on the transfer. The first part you can fix, the last part is a lot harder.

I don't mess with this stuff much any more (I'm the collector lol) but I've been in a few bands/studios and I still play around when I want to spend the time. I've queued up Monkey wrench as a real time master input and remastered two versions. They are both very similar, a bunch of tweaking but 02 is brighter in the vocals and 03 in the bass and leveled out some through the rest. BOTH are way too high on the overall clipping level, but that's again from the original and you cant change the source levels without wiping out some of the content.

I can fiddle more but before I waste any time give me some feedback on whether they are better/worse... you'll need some decent sound output and the originals to critique. If I'm close but there are recommendations I'll try and do new ones (and HJP), but i think they are closer to what the original recording might have sounded like. mp3 as my space is limited, and they won't be up too long.

Up now Simon:

320 mp3 as before - had to remove MR, so feel free to make them available on your server. The real masters I'm working with are 80-90 meg 32 bit wav files. PM me re previous access etc if you want them uploaded. Spent more time on this track, two versions again; clarity & high end emphasis only first, then close to two hours balancing the bass end back without re-tripping the clipping. I go by the meters and then audibly listen to every change. Clipping is present at source so it's a bitch.

Can and will do a fair bit more to sample the source but right now I really like the second version - and most people may not even hear much difference, but it's pretty well balanced and the bass and drums are pretty clear without bashing the guitars or vocals. My own opinion said once and finally is that Goldsmith laid every bit as good a drum track as the final version - different but then WTF it was demo. I think in our heart of hearts we all know Dave could play every bit as well and better, but he could never do both guitars and drums live. Early days here, and still in the "I did it all on the first record" mindset I'm sure. But Will was and is not the 2nd rate drummer he has been made out to be in the past, he just deserved to be treated as part of the band, as Taylor next was after Dave realised he'd gone too far... (shit sorry I need some Star Wars scrolling here I'm sure... )

Still wish like fuck we had the rest of those damn reels...

As promised have played some more:

* All prev links below gone - masters were clipped (I knew this) sound was bright and loud but way out of whack with any kind of production level even given the shitty source.
* New low level masters taken with a bunch of tweaks, don't ask me how or how long, but it was less than 6 hours each and I've only heard each song 50 odd times so I've done worse lol.
* No clipping start to finish, mixes are as close as I can get from the source to what I feel was intended from each original demo. No clipping means NOTHING output over studio standard 0.00 Db, all editing done totally to studio output standards. To my ears nothing over powers anything else, final mix is much lower level than before as it had to be, but Will is clear and easily distinct enough to judge, as are everyone else (very carefully balanced with the original finals in my head), and IMHO it shits over the original YT upload... but at the end of the day that source is all I have...
* No mp3, these are CD cutable 16 bit wavs direct from the final 32 bit masters I edited with. Put them on a CD and play them on your stereo...
* Original "highest" level YT flv link also include with Will's? "Star Wars" monologue, both for those that missed it and to compare.
* Sorry it's a file sharing site, but no captcha horseshit - give me an alternative if you feel it's worth it.
* Top collectors can do other shit too :-) Enjoy, FooZ

Cheers!

As long as we don't have the source tape/cd etc. Youtube rips will do.

It's interesting reading really old interviews now that I remember reading way back in the day, when later events and the passage of time have put a new or ironic spin on portions of them.
Quote:
JJJ: You're not too critical of William's drumming are you?

Dave: When I first started playing with different people, I went into it with the attitude that I'm not going to hand someone this tape that I just recorded and say, "learn all these drum parts backwards". I want them perfect but there is no way I'm going to go to someone and say that because the record is just the way I would have done it. I tried to find a drummer that had enough feeling to go and put himself into it. William can do everything that I can do. I say, "just learn the arrangement of the song and then I don't give a fuck what you do with it after that". He is an amazing drummer. When I saw him play with sunnyday real estate, and then heard that they were breaking up, it was like I had won the lottery. He is a fucking awesome drummer...and awesome drummers are hard to find. And I found him within a month of really looking and it was just amazing. He is like the big fish in the pond.

Epic bump. Do you happen to recall when/where Barrett has said this? I'm pretty sure you're right and I want to move it to that session in my book/guide but a more solid reference than 'It really sounds like it' and 'Liner notes are wrong sometimes' would be good.

As I recall it was someone on this board (or maybe even this board's precursor if it was still around then) who had simply approached Barrett Jones online, asked him some Foo-related questions, and had gotten an answer. Also if I recall correctly, the consensus at the time was that Jones was probably mistaken and that the liner notes were right.

EDIT: Now that I'm thinking about it, it may have been MiamaiBaller2k5 who had talked to Jones. Was it you, MB, or am I all kinds of confused?
