It's nice to see a lot of people that share the same sentiments that I do. There's still plenty of fans from 1995-2001 who got into what was essentially a much different band. That's not a knock on newer fans, I just feel like the band have kind of locked into this generic mid-tempo thing for too long.
This is what I'd like to see:
Bring back some of the melodic nature of the early records. Each new single blew me away with how catchy they were and I haven't been really blown away by a FF song in a long time. I don't hate the new stuff, but I don't feel compelled to go back to it.
Bring back some variety. The first 2 albums have songs that are all over the spectrum. The first album goes from Alone+Easy Target to Good Grief to Floaty to Weenie Beenie, but it works.
They need to bring back the alternative rock influence.
This will be a controversial suggestion, but I really feel like they were at their best when Dave was writing with his own drum parts in mind. That's not a knock on Taylor, he's a phenomenal drummer, but Dave's style is much heavier and better suited for the band.

You do know most of them have solo records out?

That's not the same.

Songs by bands with the "same players, different authors" dynamic seem to come across differently than the solo material those members produce.

Something no thrills. Definitely no accompanying TV show. I want the concept to just be: great songs.

Sonic Highways II is not happening, let's just clear that off the table now.

Along those lines, I agree that i'm done with gimmicks and just want a solid straight-up album. Nate said in an interview (and i'm paraphrasing a little) that they want to keep it interesting for themselves and "justify another twenty years", but they shouldn't have to work that hard.

Yeah, kind of. I felt that the solo of Outside strayed into Pink Floyd-esque prog rock at the live shows and I didn't think that kept the crowd upbeat.

Hard rock with great melodies and a bit more time spent on the lyrics this time for me.
