Default Foo Fighters record sales discussion

Today I decided to look up the current BMI certification for FF here in the UK. Then I thought we could perhaps find data for the rest of the world, see if we can get a current estimate on how many they've sold to date, and keep it updated. BMI doesn't give you numbers, but it tells you what they've been certified and when, so you can get an estimation from that.

I believe the current total is estimated at 20 million worldwide but can't do any harm to add it all up.

CURRENT UK CERTIFICATION

Albums

Greatest Hits - 3x Platinum as of Feb 13th 2015 (900,000+)
One By One - 2x Platinum as of 22nd July 2013 (600,000+)
In Your Honor -2x Platinum as of 16th December 2005 (600,000+)
Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace -2x Platinum as of 25th July 2008 (600,000+)
There Is Nothing Left To Lose - Platinum as of 22nd July 2013 (300,000+)
The Colour And The Shape - Platinum as of 22nd July 2013 (300,000+)
Wasting Light - Platinum as of 22nd July 2013 (300,000+)
Sonic Highways - Gold as of Nov 21st 2014 (100,000+)
Skin And Bones - Gold as of 22nd July 2013 (100,000+)
Foo Fighters - Gold as of March 1996 (100,000+)

Total = 3.9 million+

Strange that S/T hasn't been certified since 1996, makes it impossible to know how well it's doing as of today. You would assume it is one time platinum at least. So we're certainly over 4 million UK album sales, probably nudging 5 or more because IYH and ESPG both haven't been re-certified in a while. Back to 4+ if we don't count Greatest Hits.

Singles

Learn To Fly - Silver as of Dec 26th 2014 (200,000+)
Everlong - Silver as of Oct 17th 2014 (200,000+)
Best Of You - Silver as of 22nd July 2013 (200,000+)
The Pretender - Silver as of 22nd July 2013 (200,000+)

Total = 800,000+ just on those four, no others are certified as Silver is the lowest. These include digital downloads as well.

Videos

Everwhere But Home - Platinum as of 22nd July 2013 (50,000+)
Hyde Park/Skin & Bones - Platinum as of 22nd July 2013 (50,000+)
Live At Wembley - Platinum as of 22nd July 2013 (50,000+)

Total = 150,000+

CURRENT US CERTIFICATION

For the US we need to look at RIAA certification, a similar process. Unfortunately the cerficiations haven't been updated recently, so the figures won't be very accurate for today. They work as a minimum though.

Albums

One By One - Platinum as of Sep 10th 2003 (1,000,000+)
In Your Honor -Platinum as of July 26th 2005 (1,000,000+)
There Is Nothing Left To Lose - Platinum as of Dec 13th 1999 (1,000,000+)
The Colour And The Shape - Platinum as of February 26th 1998 (1,000,000+)
Foo Fighters - Platinum as of February 26th 1998 (1,000,000+)
Wasting Light - Gold as of May 18th 2011 (500,000+)
Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace -Gold as of December 13th 2007 (500,000+)
Greatest Hits - Not Listed
Sonic Highways - Not listed
Skin And Bones - Not listed

So even with the very old certifications and missing albums we're looking at 6 million+, up to date and including those we've got to be looking at 10+, surely?

Singles

Learn To Fly - Gold as of June 12th 2006 (500,000+)
Everlong - Gold as of March 31st 2006 (500,000+)
Best Of You - Platinum as of April 24th 2008 (1,000,000+)
The Pretender - Gold as of Feb 13th 2008 (500,000+)
Times Like These - Gold as of March 31st 2006 (500,000+)
DOA - Gold as of March 31st 2006 (500,000+)

3.5 million+ just on those six.

Videos

Back And Forth - Gold as of July 15th 2011 (50,000+)
Everywhere But Home - Gold as of Dec 17th 2003 (50,000+)

100,000+ for just those two.

If anyone can find data for other countries or has more up to date info on the above, do post it.

According to Blabbermouth, Sonic Highways sold around 190,000 copies in the US in its first week. However, it dropped 82% in the second week (link).

I hate how they don't update the sales numbers until the next "plateau" is reached.

Sonic is near Gold U.S., but last go round Wasting Light went multiplatinum, most of whixlch, (2 mil) was outside U.S. - rest of globe.

For certs check Billboard, U.S.,
United World Chart, World,

Both of which can be found on a great site, with many others:

alaskajim.com

Cheers dears!

Oh, and for concerts it's Pollstar, top grossing tours,
of which Foo Fighters nearly always make top 10 0r teens

Because so many people have no taste! I'm also disappointed that GH is the top seller

I always figured sales would be a bit higher.

The RIAA database (http://riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata....able-database),

I'm pretty sure this is actually up to date. Search for someone like Taylor Swift, and you'll see certifications from 2015. I suspect this is more just a sign that records don't sell as many as they used to.

This Billboard article from May 2014 says that Foo Fighters have sold 11.1 million albums in the US. Its probably a reliable source: http://www.billboard.com/articles/ne...bum-hbo-series

This earlier news report from 2011 says that Foo Fighters have sold 10 million albums in the US, so obviously that has increased by 2014 as given in the Billboard link above. This 2011 news article does however give a break down of US sales for each album: http://blog.rock.inmusic.ca/2011/12/...e-loaded-.html

As much as people criticize Wikipedia it is actually pretty reliable for record sales as long as it is well reliably sourced which the Foo Fighters discography does seem to be: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foo_Fighters_discography

Maybe it just got a lot of exposure as the follow up single to Best of You which was massive. It seems odd that DOA was not included on the Greatest Hits album given its success (although the video for it was on the DVD that came with the deluxe edition). Its a cool song though, very catchy, could probably crossover radio formats. It hasn't been in a live set since 2012 though, and even back then it was a rare occurrence.

To be fair All My Life is probably the Foo Fighters song that most likely should have a certification but doesn't. But there's still time. I mean if you look at most of the dates when Foo Fighters songs have been certified it is usually quite a few years after it was actually released (perhaps with the exception of DOA lol). Take the My Hero single, it was released back in 1998 but wasn't certified Gold in Australia until 2014: http://www.aria.com.au/pages/httpwww...ngles-2014.htm I'd say its down to the touring in front of huge audiences and longevity of the band that gets them these certified hits years down the line.

If anyone is still interested the All My Life single has just been certified Silver in the UK. That's 200,000 sold.

Just do an artist search for Foo Fighters and click exact match: http://www.bpi.co.uk/certified-awards/search.aspx

it was also widely promoted, it had a funny video (people love that) and big tv performances such as the EMAs with a little bit with Borat in the middle of it (his movie was a big hit then), and also a SNL performance.

plus it's a pretty good song with popular appeal, I'm actually surprised it didn't make it to the Greatest Hits and more live sets.

it's also one of my personal favorites. =P

I was reading an interview with Nate, and noticed a telling comment.
Quote:
When record-sales income disappeared, we started playing bigger and bigger shows so we don’t lose money on tour. We make money on shows, and that’s how we support ourselves.
So their record sales income has disappeared? Not gone down, but disappeared? Maybe that's not news to anyone else here, but that kinda surprises me.

He doesn't mean literally, surely? Sounds like hyperbole. Almost all bands now rely on touring to make a living off their music though, so I can see how disappointing it can be.
