Default The Next Album: What do YOU want it to be like?

All the regulars know by now that I've been begging for a Foo White Album for years now. (Every person in the band are talented songwriters, so why not go experimental/crazy on the next one? What do they have to lose?)

What do YOU hope to get out of the next album?

PS- Please don't say choruses that repeat for two minutes!

I would LOVE them to somehow catch the songwriting vibe of the three first albums.

I mean, with songs that actually start somewhere and develop well and have a feel to them. That's something that I feel has been missing since 1X1, they've had decent songs after that but somehow the energy isnt there.

It's not the "they've aged, people and bands change" - thing, it's really not a question of the style of music they're doing as long as it has the energy. I love Walking After You as much as I love Weenie Beenie, a good song is a good song.

So, more melody and energy, less of the repetitiveness that has been more and more prominent lately.

9-10 Songs that are fluid together. A hybrid of There Is Nothing Left To Lose and Wasting Light, so to speak.

Lots of Shiflett leads and opportunities to carry songs.
Mendel lines that stand out in the mixes.
Background vocals/harmonies that aren't Dave's voice overdubs.

A Joan Jett apprearance.

A Rami Jaffee mellotron breakdown in a song.

For fun, a real music video to accompany a song or three.

A tour that then features the entire new album, not just 2-4 of the songs.

- I want it to rock, maybe an indie rock vibe.
- I want at least 13 tracks, no filler.
- I want them to bring b-sides and covers back. It would be killer if they pulled their 1X1 concept where each member chose a song to cover/sing it.
- Possibly more input from the guys.
- Done in their studio, no gimmicks (e.g. guests, special studios, no studios, space).

I'd throw in "Gil Norton"; but after ESP&G, it's pretty clear that a producer has nothing to do with the heart of the songs.

THIS. I really miss Nate's bass lines.

There was a good part in "Rope" but nothing can ever touch the genious on TINTL, especially what he plays on Live-In Skin's chorus. Just genious.

Live-in Skin may be their most underrated song. It is so good, but gets lost by many on such a great album.

Yes to this!

Have the other guys sing the backup parts (and not just Taylor on one song). They'll be the ones singing it on stage, so why not make the album sound like the inevitable live performances?

No gimmicks or theme or anything other than writing a bunch of songs and picking the best ones.

Not every song has to be 4-5 minutes

Dropped D/alternate tunings.

Let Nate do what he wants on the bass without reigning him in or dumbing down his parts.

Do you think the other guys should be able to have songs on the record?

I think it would be nice to have more input and maybe even songs written by other members but at this point in the band I think it's clear that this is Dave's show and I wouldn't expect that to change after 20 years.

If they did a double LP, they'd have enough room.

Maybe Dave will want to loosen up on the next one. It'd be cool, you know, for one album.

No gimmicks. No nonsense. No guests. No keyboards, no brass, cellos, just guitars and drums! Oh and a decent mix (No brick-walling), Dynamics but not in the sense of acoustic/rock, more like what we got with a song like Stacked Actors.

It's hard to request something like their 'early stuff' because that ship has sailed. But Wasting Light was probably their best effort in recent years and I'd be happy with something like that.

I donīt think so.

The ship never sails for a good song. I mean, Everlong will never get old. Their songwriting is different from the old times and lots of folk dig the new stuff, it can be seen at their gigs. The Pretender is the song most people seem to know.

If they did an album with songs like they used to I think it could be refreshing for the casual fan and us old geezers as well.

I'ma add: More foolishness.
Drop the seriousness, in the lyric content, and even in the dramatic type of voice used on some songs.

Back in the day, one of the knocks on the Foos I'd hear is that Dave's voice wasn't "rock" enough (whatever that's supposed to mean).

I think the more mannered vocals are probably a response to that.

I'd agree that I liked Dave's voice more on the first few albums . . . it sounded more unforced and tender.

I will say this, I think things are sometimes overthought on the most recent albums. Even the notes of microphone feedback feel deliberately chosen.

Maybe they should record live with no overdubs and then add the vocals immediately afterwards.

They should shoot for 3 to 4 dozen songs at least. Any member can bring their best material and everything gets recorded. Anything goes, any style. Band members can interpret their parts as they see fit. The key is to get it down when the fire is hot.

Chris should be able to do solos, Nate should do his fun bass, Pat could add his punky grunge noise, they could jam out instrumentally on some for fun. Vocals should be done in two takes, let the guys sing backup if they want.

The rule should be no re-records . . . whatever they get on tape, that's it. They should also resist the urge to use post-production to basically reproduce the album.

Afterwards, they pick the best 25-30 songs and that's their album.

Let it be primitive and raw and weird and sometimes silly.

Lot of good ideas in this thread already.

I'd love a Foo White Album. Have everyone write songs and sing (lead or harmonies), and go experimental and crazy.

Give Nate freedom on the bass again, TINLTL is the best Foo bass album in my opinion.

Stop with the big stadium rock anthems with the 2 minute choruses.

And yeah sure, bring back alternate tunings. I always feel that tuning your guitar differently forces you to think differently about coming up with riffs and progressions, could be good.

But yeah none of this is happening, I don't think.
