I think Chris is better because he played guitar through his whole life while Dave started drumming and switched instruments later on. Also Chris always plays lead guitar while Dave keeps the rhytm and sings

I saw Dave in the 'Stairway to heaven' cover live with Taylor... he's so great... and you can realize that he loves doing that, he was enjoying it.

Sorry if i have mistakes, i don't know MUCH of english.

Chris!

And here's what Dave has had to say about Chris's work (in getting the job):

"Some people just learned one of the three parts, and others expected me to play everything. But Chris [Shiflett] learned all of the parts and figured out -- without me telling him -- which parts worked best in which places, since all the parts can't be played at once. Chris proved that he was good at knowing which spaces to fill and which to leave open -- that got him the gig.

"Now it's clear that Chris can do almost anything. He can be just as dirty and sloppy as Pat, or he can be as precise as Franz. He definitely plays really tight, but because of his hard-core, punk rock background, he also knows when things should be messed up. He really gets into it when he plays, and you can tell when something's building to a climax -- he kind of goes off."

Chris has better chops, but Dave writes the songs.

It's great to be able to play with blinding speed but from a practical point of view, the only people who are impressed with great technical guitar players are other guitar players. For example, Jimi Hendrix is arguably the best guitarist ever, not because he had great chops but because he also wrote great songs that are still played on the radio today, vs. Yingwie Malmsteen, who plays 2x as fast as Hendrix but how many of Malmsteens songs do you know?

I think you miss the point of why Chris is a good guitarist. It's not because he has faster fingers than Dave -- he does, though there are a gajillion faster players. In the Foo Fighters his playing perfectly compliments Dave's playing and adds dimension to the song. Often what he adds is largely subtle but becomes an integral part of the song. His lead riffs on Times Like These and Have it All, for example, or the octaves in Best of You that build up the song. Chris isn't "just a technical player." Jackson United really showcases Chris's talent; there are songs where there are five or six guitar parts, all different but all making the song whole. Where a "technical" player might have made a big muddy jangly mess, Chris knows how to arrange guitar parts and make them work. In short, he knows how to write songs. He knows how to compliment what Dave has written, he knows exactly where to go off in his own direction.

If Chris decided not to play with the band for one show, and the guys performed IYH as a three piece, with each member playing his respective part, you wouldn't even recognize some of the songs, Best of You in particular. The songs would be missing vital parts of the arrangments. If, on the other hand, way back in 1995 the old lineup played without Pat, the songs would sound pretty much the same; they might sound a little two-dimensional without that extra guitar layer, especially during the Oh George solo, but since Pat by and large just played the same thing Dave played, you'd certainly have no trouble recognizing the songs.

It's a testament to how far the band had come musically that when the guys tried being a three piece in '99 it didn't work, because the songwriting had reached a point where they really needed two guitar players playing different parts.

But.. to answer the question, I would guess Shifty.

What about Dave, Shifty, or Smear?
Pat - I many ways he reminds me of sterling morrison - so calm and cool

I agree with you 100%, I never meant otherwise. I was merely pointing out that guitarists that write songs are often more memorable than guitarists that just perform them. Take John Fogerty, for example. In CCR he wrote, sang, produced, arranged, and played the songs. His brother was the other player and he had better chops than John...but he didn't write the licks. There is really no right or wrong answer to this question anyway, IMO. They both play well enough to stand up on a stage and perform in front of lots of people.

Chris has been skill as a lead, but I think Dave is better as far as song writing is concerned. Then again, Chris hasn't really written that much. Then again, I might just be talking out of my ass.

Dave is a kick ass guitarist, so is chris. But dave can play lead but why when he got a good guitarist like chris and when he has to sing. Dave takes the lead in no way bak tho and thats pretty good.

Perhaps Chris is the better guitarist of both, but i'm not sure, because dave can play very well, too.

But, Dave is the better Musician, there's no doubt about it, i think! Any antitheses?
