I got a copy of the album from Sony this week - when the tracklist was announced a while ago I thought that (like with most soundtracks) such a mix of artists would make for something that didn't 'flow' smoothly, but it does. Especially the end - If I Were Me could have been on the acoustic IYH disc & it sets you up nicely for Mantra to finish the disc. It's a shame Petty isn't playing on the disc but I'll take his quote intro-ing the BRMC track.

Nice and interesting thoughts. Can't wait to hear all of it! It seems most of us are in high anticipation of Mantra.

I didn't even realize Mantra was going to have vocals, unless I missed that in the film. Sounded great as an instrumental

They were playing songs in the theater before the premiere, "Mantra" definitely stood out. Had to grab a couple seconds of it on my phone, Dave's voice sounds SO good on it. Definitely gonna be a highlight.

The soundtrack is apparently streaming now over at NPR.

http://www.npr.org/2013/03/03/172990...y-real-to-reel

Question - when will the physical pre-orders for this go live? Anybody know? I'd much rather want vinyl/cd than iTunes for this...

Beat me to it.

I hate to skip songs on new albums (for the sake of getting "the flow") but I went STRAIGHT to Mantra
I came and all.

EDIT: Amazon has the digital, CD and double vinyl on preorder.

EDIT2: Great record. Cut Me Some Slack is easily the worst and it's still good.

CENTIPEDE. WOW.

I always worry about being disappointed in something I am really looking forward to. I don't have to worry about that with this one. I love it. I agree that Cut Me Some Slack is the worst, but still good.

My top 3 favorites so far:
1. Mantra
2. If I Were Me (zeroed in on this one during the film because it was just so beautiful, love Dave's vocals on it)
3. Centipede

Do we take it from the way the artists are credited that Dave wrote the lyrics to Mantra? Perhaps with Trent adding his own lines?

I just listened to the online stream of the soundtrack, and after the first complete listen I'm a little disappointed in it. Maybe it'll grow on me, but my first thought after listening was "Why is most of it (noise) ballads?" I like the Rick Springfield and Lee Ving songs best, and the Stevie Nicks song is ok too, but the rest is just a little "meh" to me. I had really high hopes for Mantra when I saw it was Dave with Trent and Josh, but it didn't really do a lot for me.

Some of the songs are obvious standouts while others strike me as filler. The production, however, is fantastic and so I tried to listen to each track with the idea of what they represented, what story they tried to tell in the overall 'anthology', so to speak. A couple are pure indulgence. Overly so. I was surprised to find that "Cut Me Some Slack" turned out, I felt, to be the weakest track on the record. "Your Wife Is Calling" (despite its subject) had me air-banding and it probably wasn't attractive but it sure felt good. "From Can To Can't" is a ripper and "The Man That Never Was" is as fun and energising to hear in its entirety as it was to preview in the movie.

Every aspect of "If I Were Me" brought tears to my eyes. (Was this an IYH leftover or brand-spankin' new?)

Yeah I tried to like "Cut me Some Slack" really bad, because of the line up, but it's just the least attractive song on there for me. Maybe some of the songs will grow on me, but this was my frist impression.

When was this track renamed? I'm guessing you're all meaning to the Jaffee/Greene song? I had it listed as "Once Upon a Time, The End".

'Once Upon a Time' was how it was first listed on the Sound City site I dont know exactly when it changed but I've a press release mailed to me on January 3rd that calls it 'If I Were Me'.
