Question What is objectively the best Foo Fighters song?

This might be impossible but I want to try if I can to start a discussion of what, objectively (not subjectively) the best Foo Fighters song is.

A quick lesson just in case:
Objective - undistorted by emotion or personal bias;
Subjective - taking place within the mind and modified by individual bias;

This isn't the place to say what your favourite song is, or some song you like just because your cousin's friend's dog died while it was playing or something.
I have favourite songs by plenty of bands but know that they have others that are objectively better songs.

It doesn't have to be your favourite song, just the one that you think is the best music that the Foo Fighters have made. For example the song that has the best combination of great lyrics, melodies, instrument arrangements and playing, and just the general feeling.

If possible you should try not to be swayed by production values that might take away from the song.

So think about it for a while, pick a song and try and give a decent explanation of what makes that song their best.

I want to have a think about it before I come to a decision myself. It's not easy.

Really though, I can't think of a Foo Fighters song with a better mix of great melody, music and lyrics. Most people would call Everlong their "masterpiece", but Aurora has always been above it in my opinion. It's easy to get lost in the song, and it's on and on and on...

It's not easy to explain.
Yeah ok, fair enough. Thanks the answer and for trying to explain.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all by the way. I'm inclined to agree with you. I've always generally thought of Aurora as being their "best" song. If not always my favourite at a particular time. I used to watch this every day...I learnt every bit of that performance off on every instrument. Perfect - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzXLv9Efbwg

It is hard to explain though, you're right.

Any other suggestions anyone?

I'd have to say Everlong.
Why?
-it has perfect duration (like most singles do)
-it's catchy and you'll never get tired of listening/playing/singing it (well, that may be my own personal opinion, but I think it applies in general)
-it's simple (speaking in terms of the song's strucute, amount of verses/chorus/etc and their order)
-it's melodic and hard rocking at the same time
-it sounds great acoustic
-the main guitar riff: it's original (the chorus isn't though) and awsome!
-the drums fit really well with the other instruments
-everytime you show this song to anyone (who likes rock in general) that never heard it before, he/she will probably like it (experience taught me that)
-I can't think of anything else right now (or I got bored), but I'm sure there is more explanation.

As you can see, I like using parentheses to make myself clearer, crazy eh?

Edit: Also, Bob Dylan liked it and showed interested in playing it (he supposedly wote the best song ever or something according to some magazine(s), right?)

in my opinion, 'Aurora' is very over-rated around these boards. it's an ok song, but i used to skip it often, and didn't really give it much attention until i read all the love for it on here. i still don't see the appeal. far from being the best Foo song. in my opinion.

I'm with OB Gene on this. I think Aurora is a solid song and I love it live. It's off my favorite album of theirs, but it's far from my favorite track on it.

I'd say it's probably Everlong. This is based entirely on how great of a song it is. Look at how much they've added to it, taken away from it, changed over the years, etc. In every version, it's still a great song.

I'll leave you with my favorite version. Everlong - 2 Meter Sessions

Objectively Everlong. There is a reason just about everyone I have ever talked to whether they are a Foo Fighters fan or not really like that song. Plus Bob Dylan giving it kudos, that the Foo Fighters have played that song more than any other song live in various forms whether full band electric, dave solo, acoustic, whatever. For me that is the test of any song if it works no matter what format it is presented in. So objectively that is their best song.

Subjectively I couldn't pick one because I get into different songs at different times based on mood or atmosphere or if I have heard songs a lot or haven't heard some in a while. I personally don't think Aurora is anything special. It's a good song but I don't think their best objectively. Of course then again that's subjective so I guess I can't really be objective as a fan. And now I have gone and wasted your time if you are reading this and taken up space on somebody's server that could have been used for something far more interesting. What if by posting this it causes there to not be enough space, speh-eh-eh-ace for something really important? My God what if it was to cure cancer? What have I done? Or more importantly what if I have caused a porn site to not have enough bandwidth so that some dude playin with his pud gets his rhythm thrown off and it totally ruins his jag session? I don't know if I can live with myself after this.

My Hero - great intro, meaningful lyrics, great refrains lyrically and musically, perfect tempo.

Not even my favorite foo song but it's top 5 and I always smile when I hear it unexpectedly.

this may not be a popular answer, but I'm tending to think I Should Have Known is quite the masterpiece. It's got everything—beautiful lyrics, emotion, melodies, instrument arrangements and playing, and "just the general feeling" (even though that feeling is melancholy).

Since that song hasn't existed for long, it's hard to say if it will stand the test of time in the same way that Everlong and Aurora have for me....but right now, that's the one.

The Pretender

It's not my favorite song, but it speaks to everyone. It's powerful instrumentally and the lyrics, often over looked, go pretty deep. The dynamics in this song? awesome to.

Best song, chordwise, structure-wise,sonic-palette wise et cetera? I think I'd have to say Rope, simply because the chords they used were very original and that pretty much trumps every other great thing they've done. Rope is literally music to my jaded ears.

A lot of people here are still going "great intro" or "cool chord structure".
I think it's really hard to really find an objective "best song". Maybe you could discuss it in absolute terms of production, best duration, dynamics, arrangement, drum/guitar/bass-sound, and the use of effects, and the originality. But it would still really boil down to subjective outcomes. One person could really like one guitar sound or effect for example, and the next person might hate that particular sound.
