Default Song Of The Week - The Deepest Blues Are Black

So song of the week this week is another lesser talked about song, 'The Deepest Blues Are Black' from the rock disc of In Your Honor. Very rarely mentioned when it comes to peoples favourite songs but also never really spoken of negatively either.

They didn't perform the track live very often at all but when they did it was with an extended outro as seen here - 'The Deepest Blues Are Black' live in Canal+ 2005

Some quotes from Taylor about the song -

Quote:
"There's a real swinging, 'We Are The Champions' feel. You can almost sing 'We Are The Champions' to the chorus. And I love the vocal on it, i love the drum sound on it. It's a little rawer than the rest of the album. The lyrics remind me of fuckin' Willie Nelson or something - it almost has an old-school, good, country storytelling tone to it."
Quote:
"Another one of my favourite tracks and another that's in 6/8. There is just something about it and I love the lyric 'The Deepest Blues Are Black', The drum part has got a nice grace note on the snare, and it came together really quickly."
...and the lyrics:

Quote:
Shame on you
Seducing everyone
Faded you
Your diamond in the rough

You don't have to tell me
I know where you've been
Shining once again

Will you do
The thing you've always done
Tell me true
I think you know the one

One that makes me blurry
Colors start to run

Everytime I wonder
I go under

The deeper the blues
The more I see black
Sweeter the brew the feeling starts coming back
All the deepest blues are black

How my mind is spinning
And my head is going numb
Right from the beginning
Our ending had begun
I can be your trouble
Shiver into you
Shaking like the thunder
Sinking under

The deeper the blues, the more I see black
The sweeter the bruise, the feeling starts coming back
All the deepest blues are black

When it comes closing in
Reject
Cause I gotta move
And the simple things get in the openings
Connect
Become something new
To remove

The deeper the blues, the more I see black
The sweeter the bruise, the feeling starts coming back
All the deepest blues are black
Personally I think the song is an underrated gem and it would have been even better on the album had they thought of the live outro at the time of recording. Shame it was only done live a handful of times.

So what do you think? Post your comments and thoughts on the song as usual!

I'm not too crazy about the scream/singing chorus but it is one of the stronger songs on what I consider their weakest album. I absolutely LOVE the chimey/shimmering tone of the guitars in the verses.

This was my favourite on In Your Honour when it was released. Very underrated Foo song, lacking that live outro. In fact, most songs with the classic live Foo outro (repeating main riff and crossing over a faster beat until climax) should feature on all songs! Rope, My Hero etc...

I just re-discovered this song and it's really rocking. Feels kind of dark. And the melody, as always, give me chills. One of their strongest on IYH.

Definitely one of my favorites from IYH.

That video was awesome!

The main lyric and that rhythm is the hook for me as opposed to the chorus. Just more Grohl genius...

A great piece of work that will hold up for me as well when I'm 70 as it does today.

The time signature is cool, but this should have remained "World".

I like it, don't love it, and definitely don't hate it.

It has just come to my attention, doesn't this sound like "Normal"? I don't have my iPod to verify this, so maybe my mind's playing tricks on me.

Deepest Blues became one of my favorites right away -- I still think it's an amazing and unique foo song!

I know the verses sound like World, but is it for sure that it turned into this song?

I really don't like IYH rock disc, but I really love this song, especially the life outro.

It's definitely one of the stronger tracks on IYH songwriting-wise because it has dynamics. When I listen to Disk 1 the thing that bothers me the most is that Dave screams constantly. I also think that they didn't spend enough time arranging the rock songs properly as they seem a bit too "obvious".

One of the strongest songs on the album and in their entire repertoire. I wish they'd performed it more often but it'd be a difficult one to pull off (then again, White Limo). Like a punch in the guts every time.

No it's not the same song at all. Different time (World is 4/4), different key, different tuning. The only similarity is that Dave recycled the vocal melody from the bridge of World and used it for Deepest Blues.

I've always connected to the song both lyrically and musically. The lyrics tell a story that's oh so familiar and the melancholy melody morphing into a little rage is spot on.

Love it forever. It makes me happy to see that people do like it. When IYH first came out, not too much was said about it. For me, the way the song builds... it's just relentless. When Dave starts in with "... when it comes closing in..." I mean, I usually find that I'm holding my breath. Between that and the intense guitars, I just lose my mind. Even now.

Also, I miss that people are mostly on twitter and not here these days.
