Default Dave's original, elaborate plan for LP #9

Remember during the Sonic Highways press Dave talked about a big grand idea for the recording of next album?

Turns out it was to build a recording studio onstage at the Hollywood Bowl & record the album in front of 20,000 people. When PJ Harvey did a live public recording of her last album he shelved the idea.

EDIT:
Quote:
It’s a far cry from Grohl’s original plan, which he hinted at during our chat in 2015. “I kept this secret for a long time, but I’ll tell you,” he says, leaning in conspiratorially. “What I wanted to do was write the songs, do some pre-production on a soundstage, then build a recording studio onstage at the Hollywood Bowl, bring 20,000 people down there and stream it live so the whole world could watch us record. No pressure!”

He abandoned the plan when he saw that PJ Harvey had done something similar with last year’s ‘Hope Six Demolition Project’. But why all the secrecy and subterfuge surrounding ‘Concrete And Gold’? “Well, you know, you read headlines like ‘Foo Fighters Hate Each Other’, or ‘Taylor’s Going Solo’ or I’m going solo, and we love to f**k with people,” he grins. But there’s more to it than that: by the end of the ‘Sonic Highways’ tour – following Grohl’s broken leg, and the Bataclan terrorist attack that caused them to cancel the final European dates – Foo Fighters really were in need of a break and really did mean to take one. Grohl just found it harder to walk away from the band than he thought it would be.
He mentions it in today's NME: http://www.nme.com/digital-edition

That would explain the foofighters.tv thing - though I think that appeared when they were recording SH and a lot of us guessed that watching them record would be what it was for! I would have liked seeing that but glad they decided to keep it simple and not bother with a gimmick this time

To be honest, I think the band and the fans needed a break from the whole gimmick record thing.

I think that would have been really cool, but yeah, glad we're just getting a regular album this cycle. People needed a break from the whole gimmick thing

I'm bloody sure I suggested such an idea back when ideas were flying around working out what Sonic Highways was to be. I'm sure of it.

Similar thoughts here... interesting idea, but prefer that it wasn't done. At least for this release anyway.

cool, found it. post #496 http://forum.foofighters.com/showthr...161318&page=25

and, also...while we had months of guessing what 'Sonic Highways' was, my post towards the start here was pretty much ignored "Each song recorded in a different studio?" #46 http://forum.foofighters.com/showthr...=161318&page=3

Dave Grohl is stalking me.

And Concrete & Gold was recorded somewhere other than 606, right? So the band STILL haven't recorded an album on the Neve console from Sound City that Dave raved so much about lol

I believe Dave got it from Sound City in 2011, right? So no full FF studio albums have been recorded on it yet, but they did use it for 'Iron Rooster'. They also did pre-production sessions for SH on it but they're in the vaults so we won't count them.

Yeah FFTV was early 2014 ish. I believe the orig plan for that one also got impacted by the de-scoping of SH from International to just the US. They had planned to do UK music history and some other undisclosed locations as well but it turned into a logistical nightmare.

I think the TV site was in the mix to allow some of THAT international version to originally have been live everywhere. So the live aspect probably started in SH and was moved to "9", which would also help explain why Dave had the "we already know what we're gonna do for the next one.." so adamantly in hand at the end of SH. Then the PJ Harvey thing canned it once again.

And as Simon said somewhere the other week the downside is we obviously STILL dont have a live album - which is long overdue. A bummer too since ST C is pretty close and IMHO one of the best sessions ever committed to vinyl.

Why then with this being a more relaxed studio album it wasn't recorded on the Neve? I'm guessing with the fact the studio being in pretty regular use, there's bound to be a "very hard to do a secret FF album in 606 factor" about things here. For the record it was actually recorded at LA’s EastWest Studios.

foofighters.tv was originally created for the Wasting Light Studio performance, way back in 2011. It hasn't, as far as I recall, been used for anything since. However it is still active unlike foofighters.fm, which they let lapse and is now owned by someone else.

So that kinda suggests they still might want to use it in future, but as far as I remember it was only ever guessing/assumption it'd be used for Sonic Highways or anything else. I could be wrong. Although the "stand by" page did go up in January 2014, which suggests that it when they remember about it.

IMO that is exactly it. 606 is not as private as it used to be, there are always people there, other bands recording etc. I assume they didn't think they could do it there without anyone just "popping in" one day and then spoiling it.

Still, it's just as impressive that they managed it at EastWest, it's not like it's a secluded desert studio with no eyes on it, it's in the heart of Hollywood. How they got people and equipment in there to record in secret I'll never know. I think they may have used the Spinal Tap album as cover, but still, apparently nobody spotted all 6 Foos arriving most days for a few months.

It's not like nobody was recording the the same building either. QOTSA were recording down the hall.

A block away according to Josh - United Recording vs East West

I went back through IG and there were only one or two shots that could've indicated they were at the studio before that one Derek Smalls day (which is a legitimate album but also turned out to be a convenient smokescreen).
