This.

Also, instead of trying to donate money to five millionaires who wouldn't even realise you've donated and you'll get literally no thanks, how about donating some money to your favourite local band or venue? At least then you might get a pat on the back.

If you want to support the music industry, support the people who really need the money. Bands are struggling more than ever man, use your head.

Dave, Chris, Taylor, Pat and Nate will NOT want your money. There are better causes.

Jeez, you blind man?
There it is, you wanted it and now you can stuff the envelope full of money and be done with the Blah blah blah...
Jesus, HERE Is THE FUCKING ADDRESS! PLEASE BY ALL MEANS KNOCK YOUSELF OUT! Just make sure to wite C/O Lemmy Kilmster on the envelope.

Not all of us we're being antagonistic, I for one was trying to kelp you.
It sounds to me like you don't know what to do with your money, it is kind of an insult to the hard working people of the board, and to be honest if you post in Gen Foo, you can ecpect the whole world to read and have an opinion on your post. This forum is open for the gen public to read..
Know one here believes that music and art general is dieing. Quite the opposite for some of us...

I understand what you're trying to do mrfloat. You want to make a personal gesture, to the band. Here's what I suggest...seriously. Contact one of the venues where the Foos will be playing, and let them know that you'd like to pay for something the band requires on their tour rider. Cater their meals...buy their booze....make their ice, whatever your donation abilities will allow for, and in exchange, the venue will let the band know that you, mrfloat, made this personal donation. That is unless you want to be anonymous in your altruism.

If I had money to donate, that's what I'd do.

Lets not forget they financially supported NZ and Australia with charity concerts earlier this year to assist with rebuilds after floods and earthquakes. A genuine heartfelt offer of support was met with equally enthusiastic fans.

Seriously the best way to spend your money, cash only, small bills..
LoL we should do it for the heck of it.
Stuff a bill or two in an envalope and send it to;
Foo Fighters
C/O Lemmy Kilmster
Silva Artist Management
722 Seward Street
Los Angeles, CA 90038-3504
USA

It will be the best dollar you ever spent.
It's like buying my way in, except there are no g strings to tuck my bills into,
I will just slip it into those tight jeans...LoL

Just once more trying to point out the contradiction. Why do millionaires need to charge money for their music?

DISCLAIMER: This is more of a rhetorical question. Don't try to answer it literally. This whole topic is not about a practical problem that I have, but meant to discuss abstract concepts related to music and money.

I understand the point you're trying to make. However, it costs A LOT of money to get their music out to the masses. The recording & promotion budget of Wasting Light alone had to be astronomical. That has to be recouped. If they're not trying to reach the biggest amount of people with their music, then it's the music itself that is being short-changed. Simply releasing the album for free on their website would result in a mere fraction of the interest as the promoted real world version.

Without SNL, Letterman show, garage shows, videos, Back & Forth doc, web presence, etc. (all of which costs serious money to pull off), a lot of casual fringe rock fans wouldn't even know of the record. It would just be us weirdos. They recoup that through record & ticket sales.

So even if they WANTED to give their music away, it doesn't make sense. They would end up funding their own very-in-demand product. It's not like we're dealing with the cure for Polio here. They're not morally obligated to produce music and disperse it for the good of the world.

But they don't need donations to keep going. They have a product to exchange for your money and THAT keeps the mighty Foo train rolling.

I assure you, they do not expect something for nothing.

And the more records/tickets they sell, the more apt they are to acknowledge the market's appetite by creating MORE music! Very simple concept really.

Donate to UNICEF, it's a trusted charity. They need it, there are more kids in poor countries than ever.

You could have avoided alot of confusion by saying this in your first post. This is not what you asked in the beginning and it sparked alot of debate and emotion that you obviously have taken issue with. You would have started a very legitimate thread had you just posed a general question rather than making it specific to the Foos, and then turn it into something bigger....

/facepalm

A) It costs them shitloads to produce and distribute.

B) Listen to the chorus of "I'll Stick Around".

the band themselves may be millionaires, but there are dozens of people behind the scenes that need to be paid, too, who are not. there are lots of overhead costs when running what basically amounts to a mid size business.

This,
and as for the why do millionaires need to be paid crack,

Dude, get over it- that's what happens in the real world. And these are the coolest grooviest millionaires you'll ever know,
so I damn well am proud to part with a little money to buy a little happiness and heaven on earth whilst listening to a great rock song or seein' an epic Rock Show!

Go on the KISS site or Led Zeppelin and ask Gene Simmons, Robert Plant or Jimmy Page if they should just put out stuff for free- because they're rich bitch!

Heck, go ask Warren Buffett or go to any Corporate website and email the Board of Directors with the same query about doin' stuff for free.

Again, if I'm gonna spend my hard earned dough- I'm gonna enjoy where I put my money,

My $$'s on the Foo Fighters!

cheers:>
