I watch SNL on a regular basis and I don't know if they had one rock band last year, it's not SNL's demographic right now.
Hard to imagine SNL ever abandoning rock entirely (or the Foos for the matter, who were on plenty of times before in a significant capacity). I mean, even people or acts like Prince and Mumford and Sons were on last year.

I would imagine that the invitations would be there, regardless. But maybe it had more to do with the documentary already being a significant TV undertaking anyway, and not wanting to do everything else that usually goes into promoting an album on the side... but who knows?

Well, with how little they've been playing the album at their shows, you could imagine that they would've jumped at that. jk

They probably turned it down because they couldn't squeeze in a cover.

That's true, I guess my point was that if they didn't do SNL it would have either been due to some other circumstance (scheduling conflicts etc) or the show didn't have room for them last year. I just can't see the situation being "No thanks Lorne, we don't really like the album we just released"

I've long thought this album was just an excuse to make a TV show. The music was almost an afterthought.

I think the short time constraints Dave put on himself to write the songs didn't help. Some of them do sound better in concert where it seems they've tweaked a few things.

This.

EDIT : No, wait. I think the album was an excuse to tour. It really feels like a mandatory byproduct of the TV series which you can launch a world tour on. It would be a first for a rock band to tour a tv-series, maybe it was the original "never done before" - idea..

Except that they seem to be playing more covers than songs from the album, which in itself is odd

I wouldn't be surprised if Dave was heading to a phase of focusing on television/directing

I was just thinking it would be a classy move if the 5 new songs they just recorded would be 7 Corners, New Wave, Knucklehead, Get up I Want to Get Down and some other treat, give the fans what they've heard about for years and then quit.

anybody remembers 'word forward' from the Greatest Hits Album? Just listened to it the first time in years and I think it's not a bad song. Could be played live

Just listened to it (loudly) in the car this weekend while on a road trip and we were saying the same thing. Great tune. According to setlist.fm it's only been played 3 times in concert.

Considering it was $40 and a charity do, not billed as a proper Foo show, the setlist wasn't that bad.Your $40 went to a good cause.

Learn to Fly
Stay With Me (Rod Stewart cover)
The Pretender
Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love (Van Halen cover)
This Is a Call
Times Like These
Tie Your Mother Down (Queen cover)
All My Life
Let There Be Rock (AC/DC cover)
My Hero
Breakdown (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers cover)
Best of You
Under Pressure (Queen cover)
Walk
Miss You (The Rolling Stones cover)
Everlong

Wow...was this a bar band who hasn't signed a record deal or what? If they sang 25 songs, maybe this would be easier to swallow, but half of their songs were covers.

Sure it's a charity event and the tickets were cheap, but that's no reason to be a cover band. Especially a 20 year old band. Isn't that what Chevy Metal is supposed to be??

I guess they were playing songs that most people would know, think its poor but can be lived with so long as it doesn't happen again (ie a one off)

They may not have expected a full show but personally I think when it's advertised as Foo Fighters, you expect Foo Fighters. They played the same event in 2008 and the set was short but not full of covers.

All My Life
Times Like These
Learn to Fly
Young Man Blues
Long Road To Ruin
Let It Die
Stacked Actors
Marigold
My Hero
Cold Day In The Sun
Everlong
Monkey Wrench
The Pretender

Not even one song from the latest album this year.
