Smile Were there any other WL B-Sides than Better off

I was wondering if better off was the only B-Side on wasting light or are there more?

I believe on their recording whiteboard, they had a song called "To No End," but I'm not sure it was ever finished. There's a picture of the other songs mostly complete but that one I think only had finished drums, if that.

Technically, they weren't WL b-sides but they were released right around the time WL came out. On that compilation cover album of theirs "Medium Rare" they released two new covers, Bad Reputation, and This Will Be Our Year, the 2nd of which was recorded during ESPG but for some reason wasn't released till now.

So there's those, but otherwise I think it's just the Deadmau5 Rope remix and the White Limo one by the Prodigy.

They should make a B-Side Album

Nirvana made a Singles album but had all tracks on that single IE: Track 1 Heart Shaped box
Track 2: Marigold
Track 3: Moist Vagina

yeah it sucks, looks like they don't concern themselves w/ b-sides anymore.

still, with the awesomeness of Wasting Light, I'm willing to forgive them ... this one time!

I imagine the recording format of the last album, coupled with the issues they had in just getting those 12 songs finished (i.e. "Miss the Misery" take 1 being destroyed, maybe others, I'm not sure) limited them in terms of how much they wanted to record. I was bummed we only got "Better Off" but then that was offset by the release of Medium Rare with "Bad Reputation" and especially "This Will Be Our Year," which I knew existed since ESPG and had been so anxious to hear it ever since.

Yeah Medium Rare really did make up for the lack of b-sides for WL. I do hope they return to releasing physical singles for the next album..

Miss the Misery take 1 was destroyed? Where did you read that?

Dave mentions it in there, though I can't find the particular article where I feel like they discussed it more. Maybe I read it wrong, maybe it was just the drum track that was initially destroyed but regardless they had issues early on that they overcame.

And while I'm at it, the song board for WL (including To No End, which it appears they didn't even bother recording):

Additionally, if you stop the documentary "Back & Forth" around 1:23:48, as Butch is filling out that songboard after Taylor finishes the drums for "These Days," you can see that:

"Better Off" had a working title of "Save It Up," and
"Arlandria" had the working title of "You Don't Say."

Just kinda cool info, like how "The Pretender" was originally "Silver Heart."

Dave said they also recorded a version of Seven Corners at the WL sessions, so the white board isn't the final say-so for what was recorded. I also remember older white board photos listing more songs (even though we couldn't read all the titles.)

Yes, and back then it was a ballad. The Pretender was the last song to be composed for ESP&G, it had parts from Silver Heart and the chorus which came last when they realized they needed a Rock Song for the album and transferred the whole song into what it is now. Donīt remember where I read that.

It just came to mind that originally the "silver heart" lyric probably was where "in the dark" is now.

What I do know is that John Fogerty recorded "Fortunate Son" with the Foo's, for his next album.

If you consider that to be a B-side, just wait for Fogerty's next album!

There certainly was a longer list of songs in pre-production when they were just working on arrangement but I think they only recorded what was on that final board because with you have to be frugal with tape. However '7 Corners' along with 'Dear Rosemary' and 'Better Off' were recorded in March 2010 at the house 'test' recording session. Dave put a picture of the CDR on twitter when they were posting a ton of pictures.

I wonder about that, only because when they first started posting the white board teasers (I think for the amusement value of watching us vainly struggle to glean information from them), they were already "recording" the album. As the days went on the white board list shortened as the final album took shape, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if a few more songs were recorded. Besides, we know generally they usually record 20 or so songs at an album session and pick the best ones to go on the album.

I'll have to look at it in detail but I'm pretty sure the only longer boards with more songs were just with an arrangement column and the only board with all the tracks filled in was the one you see in Back And Forth.

It seems to me they hardly ever release any b-side that isn't a cover, no? You never see any original album outtakes, just covers they recorded, or live/acoustic versions. It seems they carefully narrow down what they choose to record and then shelve anything not good enough for the album. I think Dave feels songs that get cut are removed for a reason and wouldn't feel right using them as b-sides or soundtrack songs unless they are specially reserved for something. He's even been unhappy with songs he released! he holds the band's music to high standards imho.

Plus I doubt we'll ever see singles again, except maybe an iTunes single if anything at all. It's not cost effective for them, even if they are collectable.
