US charts data also runs Friday to Thursday but they don't release the new chart until the following Tuesday.

Based on midweek data they are expected their second US #1 http://www.billboard.com/articles/co...crete-and-gold

seems to have been updated already http://www.billboard.com/articles/co...-concrete-gold

Foo Fighters score their second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as their latest studio album, Concrete and Gold, debuts atop the list. The set earned 127,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Sept. 21, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 120,000 were in traditional album sales, which also makes the effort the top-selling album of the week
This is a little strange to me - why Wasting Light and Concrete and Gold, out of all their albums? They're not the ones with the biggest songs. I guess they've slowly been accumulating fans over the years, which is pretty cool.

(Also, have they done much promo in the US, outside of Carpool Karaoke? Seems to me they've been all over Australia and the UK, but not in the US as much)

The others (TCATS, TINLTL) probably didn't get to #1 because boy bands like NSync and Backstreet Boys and other pop type groups were HUGE back then and sold way more than FF.

If you look at what else is in the UK top ten this week there aren't exactly any big name artists, no other big releases in the same week. Not to say that C & G wouldn't be number 1 if there were, it outsold the rest of the top ten combined, but it was easy competition. I haven't looked at what else was in the US top ten yet but wouldn't be surprised if it was a similar situation. Didn't In Your Honor have their biggest first week sales over there and still does ? yet that wasn't number 1, and that tells you that chart positions are not always the definitive way to define popularity.

Still I have counted that C & G is number 1 in 11 countries so far and there are still some to come in. Wasting Light was number 1 in 12 countries so C & G could still beat it on world-wide number 1's, although they won't be the same in each country.

Updated from my last post: C & G is now number 1 in 13 countries, so more than Wasting Light's 12.

That's a good point. But then, sale numbers also aren't the definitive way to compare past and present popularity, since record sales collapsed in the 2000s.

I guess you'd have to do a weighted comparison, taking into account average sales numbers for each period... I really can't be bothered

Also, I'm not sure first week numbers really say that much. For albums, surely it's the long run that matters more.

True, long run sales are much more important than first week sales, but even so if you look at the peak chart position of Foos' biggest selling albums in the UK or the US they are not the highest charting. For example in the US TCATS has their biggest overall sales figures but it is not their highest charting. You could say the same for the Greatest Hits album in the UK as well. The point being that chart positions are not definitive of an album's popularity.

I have no idea.

I saw it with my own eyes on the RIAA website... and now it's gone.

It's annoying me way more than it should!

Maybe it'll get changed back again once Concrete and Gold has been certified.

they've all been added back on (with a new certification date of 6 October, so maybe there was an admin mix-up)

TSIAN is also number 1 on two rock airplay charts

seems to be doing better than Run on these charts, actually, which is interesting

Yeah I saw that the US certifications had been updated on the RIAA website a couple of days ago. All the albums being at least Platinum or more was expected but I was surprised at how many certified singles they have. I mean I never would have predicted that Everlong would be 2 X Platinum. So cool.

As for TSIAN doing better than Run on the US rock charts, it also did better on the UK singles chart. It charted one place higher than Run and was on the chart for one week longer, but it didn't chart until the album release week.
