Default "Dear Rosemary" NOT so original

Dear Rosemary is a stand out song for me, but I after reading a review of the new record, it referenced how similar this song was to The Ranconteur's "Steady As She Goes"

I couldn't believe it until I heard it myself, "Dear Rosemary" DOES sound remarkably like "Steady As She Goes". Any comments?

There are some rhythmic similarities in the verses but that's about it.

lots of songs sound similar to others. when it's not something dramatically blatant, it isn't worth a note in the likes of "not so original" or "rip off". more like "it happens". I know the Raconteurs' song quite well, was on heavy rotation for quite some time, and even with the similarity, I dind't think about it until you brought it up with this thread. so yeah, nothing major.

I believe "Alandria" sounds more like a Them Crooked Vultures and "I Should Have Known" sounds very Jack White-ish and with a touch of Paul Stanley.

There's a bit of it that sounds EXACTLY like "Steady as she goes." But that's a great song too, so I don't mind.

I think this is the best album they've done, frankly. Been a fan since '95, and I honestly kind of thought that their best work was years behind them. I'm delighted that I couldn't have been more wrong. Wasting Light is their best yet.

the verse riff in steady as she goes sounds exactly like some cheesy 70s or 80s love song, i cant remember the name and google isn't helping but when i find it i will come back to this thread and post it.

To me it sounds like an incredible Original Foo Fighters song, You all cant handle the album's greatness. Just crank it up and play on repeat. That will cure your doubts.

Rock On

Raconteurs even copied part of their own song "Steady As She Goes" with another one on their 2nd album "You Don't Understand Me." same chord progressions pretty much and in B, but as similar as Dear Rosemary is considered

Yes, I thought the drum beat was exactly like that of Steady As She Goes by the Racounters. But apart from the beat the songs are very different.

Well funnily enough, Rope contains the same two notes in progression that I used in a song I wrote in my own garage they've blatently copied. I don't think I'll sue.

I think the album has several songs that seem to be very "inspired" by other bands, and even the cover is very simple to some other album I can't remember on the top of my head, still, I don't think this is a bad thing, they are unique in their own way, and it's almost unavoidable today if you ask me. They're taking good stuff and made it "better"

I know what the OP is saying, sure part of the verses have a similar riff, but that's pretty much where the similarity ends. I couldn't care less anyway, I'm absolutely in love with this song!

Yeah the first thing I thought when I heard the song was the similarity with Steady As She Goes by The Raconteurs, but it's only the groove and the riff. And I am sure The Raconteurs were not the first to use that groove. It's not a million miles away from Learn To Fly.

Who cares, it's awesome and original. 50% of today's top-40 music are blunt rip-offs, copy's.. Dear Rosemary isn't.

And by the way: the drum beat + tambourine is the same as in Learn To Fly.. As long as the beat suits the song, it shouldn't matter if it is the same as in another song.

The record is a Masterpiece!!!

Tell me, what is really "original" in your opinion - Maybe the first sounds dinosaurs made.

Unless you live in under a rock, every song has influences from the songs that came before it. These four chords have been around since the beginning of time, and will be re written until time ends. It is the words and timing in Dear Rosemary that put it above and beyond any song with the same structure.
