Default "Home" Meaning for me..

I would love for Dave to see this one day.. I know he is so crazy busy but I want him to know what this song has done for me and to Thank him from the bottom of my heart for writing this song. Here is the story:

“Home”
Foo Fighters
This song blew me away the first time I heard it... It completely describes the feelings I experienced the moment my Mother died... the moment I had alone with her in hospice right after she passed away. She was in hospice for 4 days.. I slept on a cot right next to her the whole time and I promised her I would be right there with her the whole time.. no matter how bad I knew it would hurt to see her take her last breath, I didn't want her to be alone when that moment came... On the 4th day, I had to run home real quick to take care of something and she passed away while I was gone.. at the time, I was completely devastated! (Now I know she did that for me.. she knew how much it would kill me to see that moment happen.. so she waited for me to leave to finally let go..)

When I got back to hospice, they let me have a moment with her alone.. When I was a little girl, whenever I felt bad/sad, I would lay my head on my mothers lap/stomach when she sat on the couch and I would instantly feel better/calm.. the one thing I remember that was so soothing was the sounds I could hear in her stomach.. strange, I know.. but it was so calming. So, as I was in the room with her after she passed away, my instinct drove me to lay my head on her stomach.. as I laid there crying, I prayed to God to let me hear one more sound from her so I could tell her good-bye and that I love her... I laid there for about a half hour and I never heard a sound...

So... when I first heard this song a couple years later.. It actually brought me to my knees:

(Song Lyrics/My Interpretation)

I wish I were with you, I couldn't stay
(this is the moment I left hospice)

Every direction leads me away
('something' pulled me away)

Pray for tomorrow, but for today
(praying for tomorrow and the long road of grieving and healing, but right now...)

All I want is to be home
( as I lay my head on her stomach.. I want to be that little girl again, home with my Mother)

Stand in the mirror, you look the same
(even though my life has completely changed, I am still the same person)

Just looking for shelter, from the cold and the pain
Someone to cover, safe from the rain
(looking for something or someone to take all this pain away..)

All I want is to be home

Echoes and silence, patience and grace
(Amazing line here.. I felt all of this during that moment!)

All of these moments I'll never replace
(All my moments and time with my mother will never be replace by anything/anyone.)

Fear of my heart, absence of faith.
(A small doubt about God/Heaven .. Is it really real? will I ever see her again?)

All I want is to be home

All I want is to be home

People I've loved, I have no regrets
Some I remember, some I forget
Some of them living, some of them dead
All I want is to be home
(This last part of the song is about how this moment in my life has taught me about what is 'truly' important, to have no regrets in life and that small stuff we all worry ourselves to death over... really don't matter at all!)

Thank you, Dave for writing this song.. It has helped me heal in so many ways!

Forever a fan... Tracy

it's probably one of the greatest achievements for a songwirte to have a song which means one thing for them, relate to someone else on any emotional level. Glad it's helped you get through a difficult time

Great story and a ridiculously good song. Brings a tear to my eye on every listen. It really does choke me. It speaks volumes to all of us on some level. I believe Grohl said he would never play the song live because it was too personal to him. He's a damn good songwriter

That made me cry. Thanks for sharing that. Dave has an incredible talent in writing things that can relate to so many people in so many ways. Most of us here have that 'heartbreak' song that moves us deeply, and the joy song that gives us cause to celebrate life. Seems like the more I listen, the more I connect events in my life to what I'm listening to at the time, and depending on what's going on...I hear new things in old songs all the time. Music makes my world go 'round...and the Foos have saved my ass a lot

Lyrically the themes of the song and album are related to situations like this, so it's quite relatable

"Music comes first; lyrics are secondary." said Kurt Cobain. I totally agree.
And here comes the question, do you people judge songs only because of their lyrics? I hear the music first, whatever Dave sings, I don't care. Maybe it'll make the song a bit more interesting when I actually pay attention to the lyrics, but again: music comes first.
Anyone with me?

You know, that is most rude comment I have ever read in my life.. Don't talk to me about music.. I am a true music lover.. and a devoted fan of Foo.. I think their music and lyrics are amazing.. and the best combination is amazing lyrics and amazing music.. which FF have both! I respect them more than you know. I just had one song's lyrics mean something to me and I thought I'd share and you have to say something like this?

Why even post a respond? To just hurt me? Well, happy holidays to you too!

Im sorry.. but it felt very rude to me. I totally LOVE Dave's music and I love his lyrics.. the combination is what makes me love every bit of it.

I apologize if I took something the wrong way but this is a very sensitive topic for me..

IMHO, I feel that nitotosi is not correct. Yes music is a part of a song as are the lyrics, but I have heard plenty of songs that have have some good lyrics, but I wondering what the artist was thinking with the music and vice versa.

The point to this thread was to have one person tell what the lyrics meant to her, and how it helped through her situation. Posting this had to have been hard for twt41172 to do, and with what nitotosi could very well be easily taken wrong. Personally to me it was insensitive to the tone of the thread.
