Default Pat Smear questions

1. Was he a fully member of Nirvana? Or just a touring?
2. Did he ever sing lead vocals?
3. Did he ever play lead guitar on Foo?
4. Die he play on all Wasting Light tracks?

1. Touring, he never played with them in the studio.
2. In Nirvana and FF? No. On his own material, yes.
3. Not that I'm aware of. He's a rhythm guitarist.
4. Yes.

when nirvana recorded "you know you're right" pat was supposed to record with them, but he was busy with something else and could not make it to the recording session, so kurt recorded his parts. i read this in an interview, but sadly i can recall which one.

He wasn't busy, he just wasn't initially invited.

We were on tour break (X-mas I think) and I was home in Los Angeles. I got a cassette afterwards and Kurt said that I could put my part on later. But we were back on tour and then things got wacky, well, you know the rest. Who knows, maybe he was just being nice so I wouldn't feel left out.

Has anyone asked Dave or Krist on whether Pat was scheduled to become a permanent member of the band? Based on Pat's closeness to Kurt during his time in the band, and his close association with Krist, Dave and Nirvana since the band's demise it appears he is accepted at least by the other surviving members as a full Nirvana member? Has his status or intended status ever been clarified beyond that interview?

Not really. Up until Kurt's death he was still just a touring member but obviously in the month before his death Kurt was closer to Pat than either of Dave or Krist, recording demos in his basement. Nirvana were pretty much done at that stage anyway, if not for Kurt's death they seemed sure to break up anyway so I doubt adding Pat properly as a member was really on the agenda in those last months.

What would have happened had Kurt lived is the big mystery though, to me it seems like he would have gone off on his own way, working with Pat and people like Michael Stipe and Eric Erlandson.

Dave would have probably done what he did anyway, Krist perhaps gone with him or again, done something similar to what did anyway.

Wow, I was never a big Nirvana fan the way I am with FF, meaning that I enjoyed their albums and stuff but never went in the fandom vortex.

Said that, this is probably the first time I believe that the Nirvana situation was very rocky at the end, I had heard of it, via Courtney on Howard Stern and stuff, but for you (Simon) to say it that way, makes me actually believe it.

I don't really have the time to dig around for them but there is plenty of evidence floating around that Kurt's death or not, Nirvana were pretty much over by March/April 94.

For one, there is the unsent letter to Krist, penned in March.

Quote:
Kris(t)
A long time ago it all mattered and now it doesnít. You did a lot for me, sometimes, and mostly youíve done less than nothing. As for now, NIRVANA is an embarrassment, my soul cant take it.

My body canít. I am going to start another band - actually Iím going to keep NIRVANA and have others in it. I tried to tell you this twice now but youíre
too drunk, fucked up, judgemental and in denial to even hear. So Iíll be blunt. Itís over.

Youíll always be rich and you deserve it for the time you spent. But thatís as far as it goes. For years I had to shut up and listen to your opinions about my songs, my ideas, my band. I wasnít put here to please you or Buzz or fuckin Calvin Johnson. Iíve learned to hate the idea of this band with you and Dave. Obviously you guys will call lawyers, with his greed but itís over. I have told our lawyers and managers. Itís my band and as hard as this is to do. I have to do it.

You wonít miss my smelly crust or old man urine. I am officially stating on record, for the last time: youíre fired, Daves fired and Iím firing myself from this nightmare and starting over with others.
As I say he never sent it but it's enough to show it was at least in his mind. Add that to the fact the last music he recorded was with Pat and Eric, and you have a pretty full picture of where things would have gone for them, musically.

I'm shocked!
Sounds a bit melodramatic and teen-ish though, god knows if he was clean or not, or serious or not.

Oh, well.

I read somewhere else that Courtney actually wrote this letter impersonating Kurt, hoping it would drive Krist and Dave out of the band. Huh.

Who fookin' cares if it's real or not...
This life is real
and the music in Nirvana was real, as was Courtney's hate and envy...

Besides the point,
Right now Krist, Pat and Dave have gotten togethers, as legitimate "Living" members of Nirvana and have created interesting great music, sound and art over the last decades....

Nirvana was great, so was Kurt, but so were Krist and Dave, still are,
and
guess what-

Foo Fighters have simply proved to be better, including the last release,
Wasting Light, which was Epic and my favourite Grohl related release ever!

Namaste

elayblooze you seem to have a habit of telling people to stop discussing topics, you might not care but others are free to discuss it and your say is not last.

That would only make sense if it was sent though really. I'm pretty sure it was Kurt.
