Default "Foo Fighters - Learning To Fly" by Mick Wall

Do yourself a favour and save your £20. I was sent a copy for review and I've made it to page 9 & can't stomach any more. Horribly derogatory about any member of the band whose 1st name isn't Dave. Because:

"...this is not going to be a book about the Foo Fighters the band. Because that would make this a fairy tale for idiots. This is instead a book about the Foo Fighters the man."

To be fair he put his cards on the table straight away & leaves you with no illusion it's Dave-centric yet the sleeve still calls it "the only serious biography of the group"

Basically the other members are idiots, careerists or both. On Chris: "bless his heart; doesn't anyone know how to pronounce his name properly, let alone what he's supposed to do as 'lead guitarist' in the Foo Fighters?"

Here's the excerpt from the guy's website

Accidentally came across it a little while back. Really bad. I can't believe he thought it would make fans want to read the book.

How wide is the release? I hope I don't get it for Christmas

I wouldn't even bother picking it up for 99p. How on earth does he think someone who likes the band will buy or like it?!

Thanks Paul!

I was going to ask if anyone had read it, but kept forgetting to post. Definitely won't be getting it then.

Why bother writing a book about a band if all you want to so is slag them off? What a total dick-splash knob-cock

He edited Classic Rock for years & wrote Iron Maiden & Ozzy Osbourne's official biographies as well as a bunch of other unofficial books on Guns n Roses, AC/DC, etc. But this book was requested by the publisher so It's for ££ not cos he's a fan.

Are you still going to review it? That, I'd like to read.

Essentially spreading a bad light on the band, as I'm sure many will read this.

Check out the Guns n Roses song Get In The Ring. Axl took an extreme dislike to Mick Wall and famously name checked him in this song along with a couple of other rock journalists from the 80's

One nugget of information that was interesting:
Dimebag Darrell's wife got a text from Dave asking for Zakk Wylde's number so Dave could ask him to play the Birthday Bash & when she asked Dave what he was up to he replied: "I'm bored in the studio just messing around with the Charlie Brown theme." so she asked to hear it & said it was 'really funny'.

I wonder if the reason he was messing with it was because at some point there was a possibility of recording the theme for that new Peanuts movie or if this was just tinkering with the version he'd recorded years ago with Barrett Jones.

Listening to the Saint Cecilia EP today, I was thinking about how much of an asset Chris actually is to the band. They certainly wouldn't sound the way they do without his finesse. Anyone who has actually listened to the band's last few records would know.

This ^. He is terribly under-rated as a guitarist and a musician.

Love it or hate it, this book actually seems like it could be an objective look at the band "from space"... though the opinions are his alone, the facts he uses to make his argument don't actually seem to be incorrect.

From the preview, this book seems to concentrate on the personality behind the band, but where Mike Wall argues that the band is solely Dave's idea, I would counter-argue that the band has grown from Dave's own reflections into a unit that functions to include growing input from all of the other members. It may be too bad that this happened AFTER Will and Franz (do any of you even know who they are?) left the band, but then again that's the process of realizing a band's vision. How many songs have been published with singers other than Dave? It's not like Dave writes Chris's solos, or much of Taylor's drum parts. Back in the day he said that he had to tame Nate's bass playing because Nate used to "travel" a lot, but that's what a composer SHOULD do.

As for all you guys making a big stink about this: suck it the fuck up. A person is only fit for life's rigors whenever they can take harsh criticism with a smile.

Here is Mick Wall explaining his position. With some exceptions, his statements in this video aren't incorrect. I noticed when he said that Krist Novoselic never did anything musical after Nirvana that he ignored Sweet 75 and other musical projects like Flipper and Foo Fighters. Also, he says that Dave's idol is John Lennon -- I haven't heard this before, but Dave USED to say that George Harrison is his favorite Beatle. I really think Mick Wall is trying to stress the comparison of Grohl to Lennon, in which case his view of the Foo Fighters would be quite favorable!!
