Default Song Of The Week - The Deepest Blues Are Black

So song of the week this week is another lesser talked about song, 'The Deepest Blues Are Black' from the rock disc of In Your Honor. Very rarely mentioned when it comes to peoples favourite songs but also never really spoken of negatively either.

They didn't perform the track live very often at all but when they did it was with an extended outro as seen here - 'The Deepest Blues Are Black' live in Canal+ 2005

Some quotes from Taylor about the song -

Quote:
"There's a real swinging, 'We Are The Champions' feel. You can almost sing 'We Are The Champions' to the chorus. And I love the vocal on it, i love the drum sound on it. It's a little rawer than the rest of the album. The lyrics remind me of fuckin' Willie Nelson or something - it almost has an old-school, good, country storytelling tone to it."
Quote:
"Another one of my favourite tracks and another that's in 6/8. There is just something about it and I love the lyric 'The Deepest Blues Are Black', The drum part has got a nice grace note on the snare, and it came together really quickly."
...and the lyrics:

Quote:
Shame on you
Seducing everyone
Faded you
Your diamond in the rough

You don't have to tell me
I know where you've been
Shining once again

Will you do
The thing you've always done
Tell me true
I think you know the one

One that makes me blurry
Colors start to run

Everytime I wonder
I go under

The deeper the blues
The more I see black
Sweeter the brew the feeling starts coming back
All the deepest blues are black

How my mind is spinning
And my head is going numb
Right from the beginning
Our ending had begun
I can be your trouble
Shiver into you
Shaking like the thunder
Sinking under

The deeper the blues, the more I see black
The sweeter the bruise, the feeling starts coming back
All the deepest blues are black

When it comes closing in
Reject
Cause I gotta move
And the simple things get in the openings
Connect
Become something new
To remove

The deeper the blues, the more I see black
The sweeter the bruise, the feeling starts coming back
All the deepest blues are black
Personally I think the song is an underrated gem and it would have been even better on the album had they thought of the live outro at the time of recording. Shame it was only done live a handful of times.

So what do you think? Post your comments and thoughts on the song as usual!

I'm not too crazy about the scream/singing chorus but it is one of the stronger songs on what I consider their weakest album. I absolutely LOVE the chimey/shimmering tone of the guitars in the verses.

This was my favourite on In Your Honour when it was released. Very underrated Foo song, lacking that live outro. In fact, most songs with the classic live Foo outro (repeating main riff and crossing over a faster beat until climax) should feature on all songs! Rope, My Hero etc...

I just re-discovered this song and it's really rocking. Feels kind of dark. And the melody, as always, give me chills. One of their strongest on IYH.

Definitely one of my favorites from IYH.

That video was awesome!

The main lyric and that rhythm is the hook for me as opposed to the chorus. Just more Grohl genius...

A great piece of work that will hold up for me as well when I'm 70 as it does today.

The time signature is cool, but this should have remained "World".

It's not a bad song - I like it. I never thought it was a great song, but I like it on the album and think it sounds pretty good. I don't think it necessarily stands out to me though.

I think the lyrics are wrong across the whole internet... I'm pretty positive the main lyric in the chorus is not:

The sweeter the brew, the feeling starts coming back

I hear:

The sweeter the bruise, the feeling starts coming back...

Since bruises are often described as black & blue etc...

Great post.
That video performance really is awesome. I typically prefer Foo studio tracks over live versions, but a lot of IYH had a compressed studio sound and a raw, big live sound that was great: this song, End Over End, DOA, The Last Song. Like many, I like this song, but don't love it. I do enjoy that the timing and vibe is different from most FF tunes. The live ending to this and End Over End are both so much better live.
