Default What's with "Resolve"?

Kind of an odd song for a record that is "one half rock, one half soft acoustic". It's on the rock side, but if the electric guitars would've been acoustics it might as well have been on the acoustic side. An odd pick over other definitely more 'rock' songs like FFL, The Sign, and Spill.

And on top of that it was even made a single, with a video. Only to be completely forgotten straight afterwards (at least by the band themselves).

My question is, did Dave/the band have the final say on what songs go on the album? And do they have the final say on which songs are released as singles? Because I don't really get Resolve being on the rock disc of IYH, and then being released as a single to promote a rock disc.

They certainly choose what goes on the record but for singles no, Dave has said in the past his idea of singles is always different to what the label think are good ones. I'm sure he gets a final yes/no decision on them either way but usually they're decided by the label which they think will be best from a marketing POV.

I'm not sure the band really knows what happened with "Resolve." I remember Dave saying in an interview a few years ago that he really thought "Resolve" was going to be a big hit. The interview's probably somewhere on fooarchive, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

Resolve is probably my least favourite single. I think I just find it boring and a bit dull.

I remember an article from the IYH times where Resolve was discussed, they talked about how they had trouble with the song, having to make multiple versions of it etc not to make it sound too Bon Jovi etc..

To me, it sounds like something that could have ended up as a TINTL-era b-side if only the arrangement was different (more towards LTF for example).

Personally I love "Resolve" I was really hoping that it would have been preformed on the Skin and Bones tour and DVD. The few live versions of it that I've encountered on youtube were all done with the four piece Foos and just didn't come off very well.
I think IMHO () If Dave was ever to reassemble the 2008 Foo touring band and do an acoustic & a rock set, a la Neil Young's "Live Rust" tour (which I attended). "Resolve" would be an outstanding bridge between the two.

I don't dislike the song, I just think it's a weird choice for a rock disc which had to be as rock as possible. And even a more weird choice to put that song out to promote a rock disc.

Fact is that itīs a single with a supposedly high-cost video,

got played live way under 10 times.

A totally weird choice for a single, or even an album track.

Would have made a good b-side IMO.

Everytime I heard it I pictured it as a tv commercial for Resolve, the cleaning spray.
The little kid made a mess on the carpet and the mom starts singing "A little bit of Resolve, is what I need now"!! Then the Resolve comes out and she's sprays it and the mess disappears and the carpet does that "bling" gleam thing.
Sorry, I always just saw this when I'd listen to it. I dug it though, but I figured they'd go the Mento's video style route and spoof themselves if it was a single, which it was and it went a whole other way.

To me that song is kind of stuck in that mid 2000's Kerry rally thing, even though it came out after the election. Maybe because of that West Wing episode.

I actually really like Resolve even if it is middle of the road "Foo-by-numbers" because I'm a sucker for three part harmonies. It's hard for a rock band that is known for their great live shows to have a hit with a song they can't do live though. Dave's voice just can't handle this song. It also didn't help that the handful of times it was played live was near the end of the set.

definitely a filler song. But Foo Fighters albums have been rife with filler since TINLTL, at least up through Echoes. Wasting Light is their most consistent album in years. But yeah Resolve is definitely weak.

This song I now find a little whiney. When it came out as a single it was around the time my Granddad died and I always associate the two in my mind and it therefore makes me really sad whenever I hear it.

The first couple times I heard it, I thought so too. I probably sent an email at like 2am one night gushing about how huge it was going to be, and I probably used the phrase "bigger than fucking Everlong"

I don't hate the track, I still like it even, but I kinda see why it was the token "4th single that doesn't really do very well and is forgotten in live sets within a year" song.
