Default One By One Era

i have some questions on this era.

1- what was with the covers the band did? there seemed to be so many b sides with this record (no complaints)

2- why did they scrap the one? that song was great and had so much potential

3- how come this era is never mentioned BY THE FANS anymore

4- why is this album so hated?

They didn't scrap it. It was recorded for the Orange County soundtrack.

If you've seen "Back and Forth" you know it was a tough time for the band. Dave has also indicated he doesn't even like most of the songs.

Mostly, I think, because of the terrible production relative the other albums, although personally I think IYH sounds much worse.

As for the covers, that was just a result of them letting off steam and having fun after the aforementioned tough recording process of the main album. They all picked a cover each to record and they did it away from 606, at T's home studio.

The production really is terrible, I have no idea how they could make an album sound so bad these days. IYH is horrible as well but that sounds bad in the way that I understand why it's bad - way too much overdubs, drum balance / sound way off, dave screams too much for the songs, poorly mixed etc - just bad production. But 1x1.. I have probably never heard a demo tape that sounds as bad as that one. Go Nick!

There's good songs in there IMO, I don't get the hate on Burn Away for example, I think it's songwriting genious. Halo, Low, TLT, AML, Have it All - great songs!

And yes.. The 1,000,000$ demos.. If I dont hear them before I die I'll be sure to come back as a fucking menace of a ghost and haunt the hoarders for the rest of their miserable lives.

I know Dave says he thinks the album is weak but I really like it, especially the first two tracks and Times Like These. I also have a major soft spot for the song Halo. If it wasn't for this album we wouldn't have the video for Low and that would be a very sad thing.

It's my least favorite album aswell, but to be honest, All My Life makes up for it. I also enjoy Come Back a lot.

But yeah, production wise, it sounds terrible, sadly. The kick drum is way too loud in the mix and it makes everything sounds unbalanced.

I disagree about IYH production being terrible though, I think it's more raw and unpolished sounding than other albums but that doesn't mean it has a bad mix or a bad overall sound.

And while we're talking about it, I think, from what we've heard so far, Sonic Highways is the best sounding album production wise and mix/mastering wise. It sounds heavy, with a full range from great and present lows, and superb highs but not too overpowered. Definitly love it so far. The guitar sound is delicious, too.

To be honest, I've never really noticed the bad production, but then I never really notice that when I'm listening to an album.

It's a more up and down album than the others - some I like and some I really don't, like I have a soft spot for Lonely As You, but I will skip Overdrive every single time.

Until the day I die I'll never understand how Walking A Line didn't make it on this album.

I've always liked One By One. There are many cool songs on it. I was suprised when I started to read people's opinions about it and realised it's pretty hated. Im glad that im not a studio nerd so that I can't hear the "bad producing" that people are talking about.

It is an awesome song. But was it recorded on the One by One sessions along with the other songs in the album?

Omg, I recognize your name from youtube. I have seen many of your AC/DC covers. And I know you are a member of Solodallas community too.

It was the follow up to their best album, with absolutely terrible production. Mediocre songs like Overdrive paired next to complete trite like Burn Away... it's pretty easy to see why the album isn't popular.

The first 6 songs are solid. They should have just released an EP.

Great song! I don't pay attention to production. I actually like this album except for a few songs.

I believe it was recorded the first time before they scrapped the album and did it again.

It's always weird to here a band say later on that they didn't like a certain album after they spent an entire promotional period convincing you how awesome it is haha
