Default The Pretender on X Factor USA

So apparently Nicole Scherzinger and Dave are best buddies, as she thanked him for letting them use the song in the show.

She also said she was in a band that supported the foos, did not know that.

You can watch the guys mediocre performance here if you want...

Why do they always butcher songs on these shows, structurally? Do they really not have the time or attention span for them to sing for four minutes? His voice wasn't great for the song but the fact it was badly cut up made it worse.

While it's a terrible song anyway, that was even worse due to the fact that guy was terrible and was just boring the whole way through. This is what is wrong with The X Factor, everyone sounds really boring when they do rock songs.

Pussycat Dolls played before Foo Fighters at Live Earth... I don't know if you'd term that as support really.

Or term it as a 'band' either.

Song was lame. Didn't have the voice to pull it off and he sounded like he was trying to oversing it.

Also. Nicole was a backup singer in Days of the new. That was what she was referring to.

UGH, not to sound like a fanboy, but I'll sound like a fanboy, here we go.
I want to stand in these idiot judges faces and ask them WHY THE FUCK THEY THINK IT SOUNDED SO GOOD, yeah it was the music, the song itself, Justin Bieber can "rawk" it, anyone can rock this mother out because of the music.

And as much as I like that Josh Kracjik, he totally blew it and was totally off attudude, Pretender MUST be sung with some furiosity or something, and he was just trying to show off something else.

PLEASE STOP THESE SHOWS ALREADY *cries like a little girl*

Oh God!
Hey he was the best of the night - at least he managed a "rock" performance...however I found it particularly awkward watching Nicole and her hair....so tragic but I just couldn't look away....*shudder*

Looking at this guy's other song choices, he doesn't exactly rock and fucking roll. If he wanted to do Foo's, he could've picked something softer than The Pretender. Something like uhhhhh....nah he would've butchered any of them anyway. Should've gone with Daughtry or something.

It somehow sounds like someone put The Pretender and Phantom of the Opera in a blender...

I agree on the oversinging attempt... I guess he's not a bad singer, it's just weird if someone picks a song that you know super well and changes the melody around. Not bad, but not good enough for me to enjoy it ;D

Also, some of the comments on youtube are weird.

Quote:
Dave Grohl is a video that's been re-mixed in a studio to create the best performance for the video's Album's release.
Dave Grohl is a video that's been re-mixed in a studio
Dave Grohl is a video
What?

Also, if they are praising him for singing live that well, they should definitely check out some Foo live performances, obviously :P
That's why I also love them so much, they rock live as much as on the albums, usually even beyond that

The judges/mentors pick the songs for the contestants from what I understand not sure how much imput the singers get in the decision.

how much lower did they make that song? I feel that if a song can't be done in it's original key, it should not be sung at all, because it messes it's original artistic integrity and energy. Even some bands transpose their own songs :/

Sometimes it has to be done either because the artist has aged or the key of the song is hittable but would strain their voice if they do it live, but I disagree with your point about changing the key, I'd rather an artist covering a song does it in a key they are comfortable with rather than reach to notes they can't hit and sounding terrible in the process. This guy didn't sound comfortable singing the song at all, very forced, but that's not down to key.

As an aside, Roger Waters has changed the key a full step down of some of the songs on the Wall tour because his voice has changed over time and he wanted them in a key that was comfortable and, honestly, I don't think anyone really cared about the change. Just makes more sense.
