Default Interesting, Some Touring Bands Paydays

http://www.metalsucks.net/2017/11/30...lay-shows/amp/

**The article also states this does not include merch or any pay to staff, venue, box office etc.

I used to sell NASCAR merch at the speedway here in Richmond twice a year, the legit stuff, not the guy on the street corner
We sold Jeff Gordon, he was pretty much the favorite or second favorite at the time. They had two semi-trucks full of merch, we worked from 8am till after midnight for two nights in a row.
My friends mom was in charge of the money and her dad was the manager of everything else.
She'd just give us numbers every few hours, and her saying $150k after about three hours of (not busy) work was not uncommon. That was just one truck
They make their bread and butter on merch

I used to make teas and coffees in a busy bar in Portsmouth. I'd make a killer cappuccino, and could handle the amount of orders coming in on a busy day in the Summer months. This was years ago when I was at university and never forgot how busy it got. Tea was a favourite in that seaside town. We'd also make mocha's and lattes etc, and this was before the trendy coffee cultures of Costa and Starbucks really became what it is today. This story has nothing to do with rock band's merchandise, I thought we're discussing our previous jobs.

We also served bread and butter.

they regularly make even more than that, it's not uncommon for them to take over $1M/gig on this tour

I actually find the business side of things pretty interesting... ok I'm just nosy

No way they are doing a big UK gig for that money. Maybe that PLUS a cut on ticket sales and 100% of all merch income.

The Rolling Stones shows have worked for ages as follows - they come to town and take everything. 100% on ticket sales, merch, everything. The organizer makes their money on selling parking space, guess that's profitable enough.

Just talked to a guy that worked on a month long tour in the US by a band that sold out 3,000 - 6,000 capacity venues, in the US the average concert goer spends a little less than 20$ on merch.

So, if the FF plays a 10,000 capacity venue that will be 200,000$ they'll make on merch each show.

That number was just for Champaign, IL.

I'm sure the bigger marque venues and cities bring in a hell of a lot more money.

And yes, Merchandise is where all the money is. That's why bands like FF go to great lengths to get some cool art for every venue and charge a nice chunk of change for those posters and shirts.

The merch is almost always money straight to the artists pockets. Even with touring, usually there could be contract stipulations that has the band giving some of that money to their publisher, etc.

Merchandise sales are the only way artists make real money nowadays.

I completely agree, EC. By the time you factor in staging, production, crew, venue costs, etc., it's essentially a break-even with ticket sales. Merchandise is the gravy train for bands.

yeah but the devil would be in the details, wouldn't it - is this before or after venue costs, tickets sales, merch sales, etc

I'd struggle to believe this number is their gross take, because surely that would barely cover their costs

It's the fee demanded to play so before ticket sales etc

ah that makes sense then!

I didn't even realize that a band could demand a fee on top of their cut of ticket sales

A lot depends on how the band travels. Some prefer to rent the venue and then they get all the ticket sales minus a small service fee for the Box Office. Others are paid by the venue, as is mentioned, and get a cut of sales.

There are so many different ways they can do it.
