Interesting to hear to say the least. You can really tell the different styles that William and Dave have just from these demos.

Pat Smear is actually an android. During one memorable show in England he short circuited, electrocuting Dave whose hair then caught fire

Chris: "You guys, I couldn't hear myself out there."
Dave: "We all heard ya, man."
Taylor: "Yeah, we heard you just fine."
Chris: "Oh. Well, ok..."

Yeah, but it's a little like comparing apples and oranges since these were rough demos no one was supposed to hear and they were probably still playing with some arrangements. A much better comparison would be to hear the Bear Creek session, but this is probably all we're going to get.

Getting my first real good listen... it's a shame the high-end is so bad. Gotta love magnetic tape.

Dave was trying really hard to keep his voice under control instead of just letting it rip like he does today.

I was wondering why the end of Monkey Wrench seemed all wrong. Then I realized it's because Dave is playing the opening lead part to the chorus rhythm instead of the the intro/verse rhythm. It sounds weird.

Got a response from the person who runs that YouTube channel, about an hour ago. Sounds like they're in the process of trying to upload the rest of that cassette tape but running into trouble in the transfer process. So they are working on it, so hopefully we'll get some more soon!

Well, Goldsmith wasn't hurting after Foo. I saw him play twice post-Foo with SDRE and both shows had huge Foo Fighters-sized crowds (at least, the size crowds Foo fighters were getting back in the late 90s). Here's Goldsmith playing on Jimmy Fallon just a few years ago.

And here he is in Brawley Banks in 2009, the last non-SDRE band he was in.

Listening again... I actually think I prefer Goldsmith's drumming on Monkey Wrench to Hawkins'. It's closer to the way Dave plays it. Both Dave and Will open the hi-hats to accent the choppy guitar bit at the end of each verse line, which, it seems to me, the song is asking for. Taylor never does that, at least not in any live version I've heard. He either keeps the hats closed, opens and closes the hi-hat to the beat (which means it's closed when he hits it, defeating the purpose), or just opens it and keeps it open (also defeating the purpose). While there may be more finesse in the way Taylor plays it, some songs require less finesse. Dave and Will's pile-driving style fits Monkey Wrench better, especially the part right before the bridge and the very end, the BOOM bada BOOM bada BOOM bada BOOM ba DA BOOM! (Or something like that...)

As far as HJP, the demo shows what just a little development can do, maybe with a fresh set of ears like Gil Norton's. I somehow have a feeling that Norton has some responsibility for how well the final album version turned out. As it is on the demo, it's a pretty safe Foo Fighters tune. But just those little breaks in the rhythm during the intro, a slightly different groove, and the added harmonies totally make the song come alive on the album. The demo is sort of flat and impotent.

Comments have been disabled for the demos video but whoever runs the channel is really going in to bat for William, claiming there's a book on the way and that he had a panic disorder when he was in FF that was exacerbated by getting the runaround during these recording sessions. Extremely defensive. All I know is that there are a lot of personal videos on this channel so one has to wonder...

Either way, it's interesting to hear these early demos. The double tracking is painfully obvious but as for William's drumming, it holds up in its own right.

Hey my name is Chan. And yes you're right it's Dave band but I'm not the one who been replying back messages, it's William Goldsmith and this goes to everyone else whom made a comment on this channel.

Could this get any stranger?

The comments in the other video with old Goldsmith footage has also been disabled.

Yeah, William was always open about having a hard time playing in front of people. I think it was an old Fire Theft interview in which he said playing in front of 200 people was just as paralyzing to him as playing in front of 10,000.

Agreed. But I have to confess I'm not sorry William left, if only for the SDRE album "How It Feels to be Something On."

Dude, you literally missed it by seconds. I was just watching it like five minutes ago!

I'm sure someone ripped it.

EDIT: Someone else put up Monkey Wrench on youtube. (Okay, which one of you is Martin Winnebago?)
