Default Shit That Will Make You Cry...

PART 1

April 1995
OK Hotel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OK_Hotel)
Tim Gabor (holding the XZ-38 Disintegrator pistol used to create 1995 album cover)
Dave Grohl

Meeting at hotel to discuss various album plans. This was the first day that DG ever saw the XZ-38 Disintegrator.

Original is colour, and square - all edits for obvious reasons.

PART 3

Parcel 2 of 4 that arrived... first seen as "The World On Time"... 23 Years Late! LOL

Parcel 2 turned over - still no idea what this contains as this is a freebee I guess partly for all the time spent with Tim amassing a bunch of words out of his head via email over 2 years since 2016. Still, this looks a bit scary. He has warned me I'm going to have a lot of questions...

No it's OK - I'm over-hyping it in my head - he says it's just more collection "clutter"... I realise he's deliberately trying to freak me out... (NOTE: Tim... you're a bastard LOL)

PART 4

Parcel 2 of 4 LAST parcel item but posted first... because I'm doing them backwards as it's easier.

The actual test art for "For All The Cows" faxed through to (redacted) at (redacted) fax number at Capitol for final approval BEFORE creating all test samples.

One of a kind. Redactions for privacy at Tim's request.

Wow. This is all a load of shit and I am in no way jealous of these terrible items.

Seriously though, super duper cool. Thanks for sharing these with Mike, Tim, and thanks for letting us all see them. Again, such a cool part of Foo history.

All this popped up in my PO box. I am simply the new um "caretaker". I paid for 3x t-shirts (eBay) and the cost to print the Tim/DG gun image. Tim and I have been in regular contact for the last 2 years or so.

He needs to sell those prints on his site!

I get what you're thinking, it would make him money - and I don't answer for him as he is reading this and can do that himself... but he's had 23 years to sell the print and that's not been a priority so far. But as with all things never say never...

PART 6A

Well known photos from the back of the No1 Exhausted 12 Inch (first official US release).

Same well known photos from the US (and almost all) CD releases.

PART 6B

A set of B/W photo COPIES at the front of Parcel 2 - some marked up in red ink. I immediately recognised them and frankly nearly fainted.

A lot of questions followed. I got close in offering a final understanding, then Tim wrapped it up.

(ME: "Send original negative - get back orig neg proof, do markups for printer - get printer proof - approve and sent for printing? Something like that?")

Nearly right Mike. I would send layout (art, mechanicals) to printer -- they make a negative or film from the layout -- the printer makes a proof (blueline, chromalin, or B/W print) -- they send that to me for corrections, etc. -- I send back the marked up proof, they make corrections (if any) -- they print job.

No real point repeating any of my other words. Let's just say I asked the right questions and go to the key parts of Tim's replies on this subject over many emails (I add stuff where needed).

Re: photo cluster,
The only shot from the Marine store is the one of Willy.

In the good ol' days, that it how layout mechanicals were sent to the printer. The red mark-up on the collage copy was for reference and placement of the images.

I used those to make my layouts from -- after I composed the photos to my liking, I then made another (composite) copy (so it's all in one piece) to put together a final comp to show the client (David)...I have a BOX of those!! Haha

Nowadays, that process is all done digitally and through electronic mail. So much easier...

One interesting note about the copies --
The copies were made before they were corrected by Capitol -- you can see all of the things that were "edited" out...
(ME: Note background people removed from several working images, and white borders added to all images where only some had them originally).

Re: Unused "MIA LIVES" marquee copy,
I think it was the marquee outside the show in Portland. Also, I believe that management axed that image from the collage...

The reference to Mia Lives -- In 1993, Mia Zappata was murdered here in Seattle -- she was the founder/leader of the band The Gits.
Her murdered is still unsolved...

I believe that the "Francis Farmer Gals" and "Alphabitch" on the marquee were the opening bands...

(ME: Alphabitch Portland, OR)

PART 6C

Not content with sending me original working copies for the album design photos I also got this original photograph. It's THE centre shot for the previous album art collage.

The back of the photo.

I was so fucked up right here I actually asked if it was from West Marine - knowing immediately after sending email I could check (and did) lol.

So again to obliterate any bias let's just have Tim explain:

The only shot from the Marine store is the one of Willy. The photo is not from the West Marine store gig but from their first Portland show -- the night before the Velvet Elvis show I believe...?

(Me: Satyricon 3rd March 1995 Portland, OR, United States (Third ever gig) https://www.foofighterslive.com/show...95-satyricon-3)

I sent photographer Curt Doughty down there to get shots for album art.

The print I sent you was one of two (of that shot) he sent me -- the other one (used on the record) was never returned from Capitol.

That ended Parcel 2 of 4.
