PART 7A

In 2016 I proudly sent Tim a bunch of collection stuff. It's a hilarious tale of hubris...

Amongst the literally hundreds now is the first ever t-shirt of course:

PART 7B

Tim replied overnight my time - he was impressed, then a bit I've removed - then the bit nobody could have expected...

Wow -- Cool stuff! (ME: re bunch of other previous pic stuff sent)

Hahaha that Mike Watt tour shirt is one of mine!
I even made up the "The not too terribly hard..." tagline on the back...
might even have that original artwork somewhere?? (ME: We might even get to that story later LOL)
Great to see it in your collection! I haven't seen that one in a while.

Pretty much immediately afterwards Tim re-reads my words and adds matter-of-factly...

Tidbit --
Incidentally, that Watt Tour shirt isn't the first ever Foo Fighter T-shirt...

I did a design that David printed only a few of but for some reason, didn't take them out of the van to give away on the night of the Velvet Elvis show here in Seattle.

The next two weeks:
I had some kind of a fit. Tim said something like "Yeah I still have it somewhere I'm pretty sure - will try and find it". I calmly said: "No worries, whatever..." (I'm lying that bit did not happen).

We talked about a bunch of stuff and I got immersed in asking questions about other things. Then:

On 16/12/2016 07:07, Tim Gabor wrote:

Hey Mike,

Sorry for the 17th e-mail (ME: LOL you can't count past 15 hehehe) but I obviously NEVER get to talk about this stuff.
I'm not trying to upstage any posting (ME: we did well - only two years wait dude) -- just wanting to share stuff before I lose my mind.
That said, I found a few shirts from the archives.

Here is that first Foo Fighter shirt I told you about where there were only 2 dozen printed
but then David chose not to bring them indoors at the Velvet Elvis show.
Judging from the line out the door for two blocks, maybe he was worried about not having enough...?

Obviously, some of the image was used for the later DPRO release for "This is a Call."

That info kinda sat in limbo for 18 months - I think I mentioned it a few times in passing, but honestly I never pushed it. Same exact deal to me as TR's Rough Mixes cassette - I get all the info, and then go nice, but hey really it's actually more about you and the history.

And that may seem like shit, and hell Tim is here and he can weigh in directly, but I like to think thats my mantra with this stuff. I want to know about it, record it, and know it's safe. Share it when that is right, don't share it when it isnt, no matter how badly I want to.

Maybe the patience works to my advantage - least til I'm dead lol.

Anyway - other discussions a while back this year finally lead to me posting:

http://forum.foofighters.com/showthread.php?t=172325

I'd love to share these in colour - but the nature of the web has taught me that's just plain stupid. Copies of every gig poster are now for sale as T-Shirts from Indonesia an hour after the images are first posted.

But for history's sake - the first ever Foo Fighters T-Shirt - of 24 made - in a bag on my kitchen floor. The least I can do is tell everyone that it exists, where it came from, and hopefully enough to prove its history.

And on that history front - also sent by Tim - the even more priceless artist layout sketch with color code tag for the "massive print run" of the shirt.

I haven't even fully discussed this last stuff with TG since getting it. Tim might even want to jump in here and tell us all directly how he made this and why. And what possibly happened to the rest.

These images hit me in at the very front of a blue folder about an inch thick that I was also sent (I'll get to that).

It's one page page photographed from the front and the back (art work literally bleeds through both sides of one page).

I made that sketch and attached the color chip for the silk screen printer to match the color.
There were 24 of these printed all XL -- they are probably still in David's old silver van!!

Here's a 1995 Poloroid submission by Photographer Marco Prozzo for a possible cover. Marco photographed the "For All The Cows" cover.

While 1995 stuff is being unearthed - on TimGabor.com wasn’t there a rough drawing Dave did (on the back on a menu or something IIRC) that was a little rude so it got passed over?

PART 6D

A visit back to those photo working copies for the first album design to finish off the photo part of that "chapter". This is the original color photograph of Willy, taken by Jeff Ross at West Marine Store that was used on No1 Exhausted & the first album. I DO NOT own this - but Tim says yeah share it to complete the "picture". This was taken by Jeff at the first EVER gig 19th February 1995.

PART 7D

Back to the T-Shirts:

Not remotely as rare as the Velvet Elvis shirt - but when Tim finally decided to part with his original first run sample shirts, I couldn't pass them by.

There can't be any better provenance than coming direct from the artist that designed them, backed with full sized prints of each shirt next to his Platinum album for a million copies of the first album sold.

Never worn or even unfolded in 23 years. I did pay for these - $200 each (x3) - open to all on eBay for 3 days before I realized he'd listed them (after saying I had them - coms fuck-up lol). A lot of money for three t-shirts, but given their history I don't care if I paid too much or too little. These three shirts made up all of Parcel 4 of 4 (I'm jumping around a bit).

"Saucer Invasion" shirt according to Tim (I've always called it the TIAC shirt)

PART 7E

"Foo Man" shirt according to Tim (I've always called it the Exhausted Man shirt). This was the original album cover idea... and he's actually named "Gabe" - more on that later!

PART 8

Back to the seemingly never-ending Parcel 3...

In 2016 Tim sent me this image of a Polaroid that's directly related to the earlier PART 4 "Test Art drawing" for "For All The Cows".

2016 Tim: "Here's a standard Polaroid proof print to get the right exposure... the camera was 4" x 5" view camera with a Polaroid back":

Tim sent me that shot in 2016 as a sample just to show me an example of how it was used inside some of the art process. We were actually talking in some detail about how the first album cover was shot. We'll cover that (no pun intended lol) later.

Anyway in all that earlier album focus the actual "Cows" process kinda got over-shadowed and not fully explored.

Fast forward to 2018.

Included in Parcel 3:

I flip out as he's now sent me THE test Polaroid for "Cows" too... then after carefully studying all my emails and notes I see (as you no doubt have immediately above) that they are NOT the same Polaroid (one has an "X")... and that we didn't actually cover this well at all before... OK, this needs more interrogation...

Me: So that's a Polaroid proof print to get the right exposure. You included it as an example before explaining the first album cover creation process.

New questions...

Me (Q1): Pic you sent me in 2016 has an "X" beside it. The one I received does not. "Detective Mike" suddenly realized HA! they aren't the same Polaroid! (at least not literally). So what's different about them...

Tim: Looks like the only difference is a slight exposure change (it's pretty subtle).

Me: Right so (and I'm guessing - we prob have two same gen Polaroid shots - one "X" marked as "nope" and one (sort of probably final)? The X seems likely to mean "no not this one" - based on normal logic and the MIA cover snap?

Tim: All "Cows" Polaroids are from the one and only photo session. In this case, "X" is the correct exposure.

Final "detective" work by me... I realize (just tonight Tim lol) that the "X" version is definitely last (as Tim says) - as despite the fact we've both spent time studying the two Polaroids... we've both failed to see mine was in fact taken before ALL the motor oil stains were added (look under the cow and lower left - Tim's reference to the process is below).

Me (Q2): What do you remember about how you setup the framing and concept for the various tries at getting what was wanted?

Tim: The Polaroid you have was shot to get the correct exposure, cropping, etc. The photographer (Marco Prozzo), was using a large format camera (4x5)... (just like the one used by Jennifer to photograph the raygun).
I think we shot 5 or 6 Polaroids to get the exposure right before switching to film to do the actual FATC photo.

Me (Q3): You went through the album cover process (before)... so how would you like to try doing the same for the Cows image... run me through the process from final approval by JS (management) that your "crude" B/W art (with note descriptions) was "good to go" through both these Polaroids and ready to print...

Tim:
- I think I did a single marker drawing from that drawing you have with the addition of the crude typography.
- The artwork was then transferred to a printing screen for silk screening the final.
- I chose the heavy brown Kraft paper to print on to imitate the kind of wrapping you may get from a butcher.
- We printed a few of them (3?).

Tim:
At the photographer's studio:
- I grabbed the prints and crinkled (folded) them up to look used.
- Re: Grease stains on wrapper; I used heavy motor oil to create those otherwise the paper would absorb it while photographing.
- After the Polaroids were shot and the exposure was just right, Marco took the final photographs.
