The way I look at it, no reviewer would ever give the Foos 5 stars for anything, simply because the reviewers have a lot of opinions about the band and it's history. It seems to be impossible for them to review something purely on it's merit.

People listen to albums to be swept away by the experience, not so they can sit and ponder the cultural significance of the artist in question.

I personally add a half star to any review that seems hung up on biographical data.

Another review that is filled with catch-phrases that don't mean anything & useless biographical references that say nothing about the album ltself.

She doesn't like the progression in Sky, she has a bias against string instruments, and she says the album lacks "clarity" (whatever that means).

Rolling Stone needs to get some better reviewers without a hipster chip on their shoulders.

Also, as a string player myself, I'm a bit offended they'd denounce instruments with hundreds of years of great music written for them.

Irrespective of history, to give 5 stars you would also have to think every song on the album is worthy of five stars? I don't think I own a single album where I can say that is the case.

Look at the "The Line as a 3rd single" thread and you see most people are not so keen on one of the 3 tracks released so far.

But I agree, I listen to music to live the experience, feel the emotion - not to determine whether it is any good or not

When I wrote album reviews back in the day, it was always a bit tricky to find the right balance between biography, opinion and description. I would've hated writing a review like "Song A is good, has a steady beat and bar chord riff. Song B is ..." I usually did a bit of research behind the band in question, briefly tied their biography into whatever they released, then tried to comment on certain songs or aspects with some doses of humor, comparison and one or two metaphors.

In the end, it'll always matter on who you get and how they try to say it (unless you're Jann Wenner at Rolling Stone US, who will just assign someone else to it if you try to give one of their preferred acts a bad review). Critic reviews in music are always a bit worthless anyway, imo, since opinions on songs and albums change constantly throughout a person's life. But there's a few that can actually write English too...

Stereogum's review is very positive on the album but also takes a lot of shots at the band. Definitely a very positive review though.

That's a really great, thoughtful review.

I'm not bothered by the reviewer's view on the last 15 years of Foo music - let's face it, he's not the only one who thinks that. It's kind of exciting to read that C&G changed his mind, actually!

It doesn't really bother me either, just came across as a little pretentious, but you're right, when it wins over someone who was predisposed not to like it it says a lot about the album (and it makes me happy)

I've never understood why reviewers, and fans, expect bands to never change. Lord knows my musical tastes, etc. have grown as I've gotten older.

Who says they don't? Sonic Highways got some criticism here and there in reviews on the lack of experimentation after so many albums. And when it comes down to fans it really depends... I've always noticed that the average Foo fan doesn't want to see the Foo Fighters change too much, but I know other bands that changed a lot over the years and some fans are happy with it and grow with the band more or less, and some aren't.

To be fair, the general consensus pre-C & G was that the Foos were sort of getting into a bit of a creative rut.

In a way that's always been the critical dig on the Foos, hasn't it, even back in the days of S/T, TCATS, TINLTL. That they had some great songs but weren't really bringing anything "new" to the table. (Because to have to be a great rock band you have to be constantly redefining the genre, apparently )

I guess it depends what you're looking for in music. Part of the Foos' appeal is exactly this, their ability to reliably put out great mainstream rock songs year in year out for 20+ years, without getting too weird and experimental on their fans. But you also want to keep it fresh, so it's a balancing act... from all I've read so far, looks like they've hit the sweet spot with C&G.

Review from Uproxx

I think it's positive?

Edit:

Another one from the Australian press

3.5/4

This is not the ''weird experimental'' record that a lot of bands make after so many years, but they are not the type of band to go into that direction anyway. I think the biggest difference is that they worked with a different producer compared to the ones they normally work with, and that might make it sound a little different, but most songs are still typical Foo Fighters songs.

Well that condescending Uproxx review is pissing me off. Thanks for adding the Australian one, that was a nice palate cleanser

Yeah I haven't heard the record yet, so going by what I read. This sounds about right to me, though - even when Taylor was claiming it was their "weird" record, I was always thinking he probably meant weird by Foo standards, ie not very weird (which is absolutely fine by me)

Apart from the overcorrection and "lots of people listen to them so they're obviously terrible"-ness of the Uproxx review, I agree that the past few albums have had really good singles and that the rest of each record was uneven (WL excepted). But it seems that the reviewer likes C&G better than SH, ESPG and IYH. So I guess it's a good review?
