Default Song Of The Week - New Way Home

Now for a new idea that I borrowed from another forum I visit. Basically every week (if I remember!) I will select a song for us to discuss. Why you like or dislike the song, what you think it's about or what it means to you, your favourite live performances, anything at all about the song.

So for this first entry the song I've chosen is 'NEW WAY HOME', the closing track to 1997s 'The Colour And The Shape'.

Dave on the track:

Quote:
"That's about winding your way through all of these songs, emotions and pitfalls and ups and downs, but at the end of the day, you realise that you're not scared any more and you're gonna make it."
What do you think? A song you like? Seen it played live and enjoyed it? When did you first hear it? Let's hear your thoughts!

I love the song, one of my all-time FF favourites -

haven´t seen it live, which is a drag, but on the other hand, it´s probably a song that works best recorded anyway.

I think the song structure is genious in the way it evolves and never repeats the same part twice (except the "I felt like this on my way home"-part of course), and the way the final loud chorus bursts open from the quiet part is still breathtaking even after listening to the song hundreds of times.

Also, one of the most beautiful melodies ever from the FF in this song IMO.

Thumbs up Re: Song Of The Week - New Way Home

It's a song that has got me through some very tough days/times

most of us have these moments in life that you reach a point where you moving in uncharted territory-passing boats and the kingdome

and you feel like ...."oh shit!"
but you have to keep going

I love how it picks up pace and goes from a whisper -softer to louder

as you go through life to find your way around
we all get this feeling
we all wonder should we turn around
go back or
crash though screaming
Like Dave does at the end of this song
which isn't really and

more of a breakthrough to the next level in whatever someone may be going through

Love it, probably the best closer on any of my cd's, I remember being what? 15 and going CRAZY screaming the lyrics.

And conceptually, it mood and tempo's fit SO GOOD.

Yeah it's one of my favourites - doesn't have a conventional song structure, which makes it a stand out FF song for me. It shows all the sides of the Foo, from the melodies to the dynamics to the screaming and riffing.

I wish I had seen it live.

This has got to be one of my favorite Foo Fighters songs ever. The intensity that builds up as the song progresses is energizing. I remember when I used to play soccer in highschool I would listen to this song to get pumped up before games. I remember being nervous and this song would help cleanse my anxieties. It's a powerful song and it's one I'd die to see live. The lead guitar riff that slides in at the end after the last "Im not scared" is the icing on the cake. Also when it comes to a song closing an album I feel like you just can't be unsatisfied with this track. "IM NOT SCARED!!!!!!!!!!!"

Forgot how much I like this song, great idea about song of the week.
I love the ups and downs and how it builds up in tempo like you guys have mentioned here, that's one of the reasons I love the foos so much, they don't follow the traditional structure of music and build up songs in a way that they get to you and get you all pumped up! My fav band!

One of my favourites from my favourite album of all time. I have seen it live at least twice back on TCATS tour and both times live it was spectucular - the whisper to the scream, the general build up of that piece, is a piece of musical magic.

I listened to this song loudly in my car as I drove away from the court having been handed confirmation I was divorced. It was a shitty year and NWH just seemed to fit that moment perfectly.

Great song, but I think my enjoyment of it has declined over the years. They have so many good closing tracks its hard for me to settle for one.

Over the years I've tended to favor MIA and Come Back, but its still up there. I like the live versions much better, too.

I had done this back in 2009. Did a "SONG OF THE WEEK" thread for a handful of songs. good discussions.

Such a brilliant song.
I so love the "I'll never tell you the secrets I'm holding" part, I still beat the shit out of my steering wheel when I play it in my car...

The structure, along with the overwhelming build in the end make it one of my favorite songs ever. EVER!

And I'm thankful I got to see it live, but it is better as a studio track, in my opinion.

It was good live when he'd change the lyrics to 'I felt like shit on my way home', I guess in the whole context of the song that really made more sense but he probably wanted to keep it clean on the album.

That is an interesting perspective. I would not be surprised if it were true. I honestly can't say whether he did that lyric substitution when I heard it. The amphitheater was so loud!

Damn, it's an incredible song though...

I'm blasting it through my speakers right now.

Thank you

Best album closer of all of them, and I was glad I got to see it live way back. I think the best thing is the build up towards the end.

It's also really fun to play drums on for Rock Band
