I never understood the ''stick to your day job'' comment when a 'famous' person gives their opinion on politics.

Politics affects us all, it's about all of us, whether you're a musician, dentist, clerk, unemployed, or whatever. That's why we can vote. Everyone is entitled to have an opinion on the matter, and whether one chooses to express it, is totally up to them.

Someone will correct me, but it was one of the Dixie Chicks who got (in a death threat) "shut up and sing"

ah, here it is in one of their songs

"That they'd write me a letter
Saying that I better
shut up and sing or my life will be over?!"

Every American can have and voice whatever opinion they want, you don't have to like it, nobody asked you anyway

I too am very embarrassed that 45 is the president. I won't apologize for him because i didn't vote for him

I have no issue with Trump or Dave's opinion. I do think Dave also said he doesn't engage in politics in his shows as most of us are there to disengage and enjoy the music. There are just as many people that were embarrassed by Obama as those embarrassed by Trump. Stop the thought police BS.

I had a quick look at twitter yesterday, and saw a number of threats of organized boycott and at least one death threat

I'm sure Dave and the Foos will be just fine, but beyond this particular case, I find this so profoundly worrying about the state of politics in the US. It is apparently now commonplace to say, "if you speak out against the politician we support, we will endeavour to ruin your career". How is this in any way acceptable public discourse, and how on earth did we get to this stage???

There's no political liberty without free speech, and there's no genuine free speech if people are routinely bullied and threatened for speaking their mind. I find this really, really chilling.

Democracy in action....except that it appears it is being worryingly eroded

I expect Dave is used to this given the things he's said in the past. Nirvana didn't exactly hide their feelings.

But...social media has changed how people see things

Dude, in addition to being a rude jerk you are also in need of both a Civics education as well as an American History education. Firstly, Mr. Grohl is a tax-paying American citizen who obviously exercises his right to vote. As a voting American citizen he is also afforded the right to FREE SPEECH. As such he has the pure, Founding Father given right to voice his opinion regardless of anyone's approval or disapproval. That said, if you don't like his particular political stance, his opinion of the person currently occupying the Office of the President of the United States of America, his opinion of the current Presidential Cabinet members, his opinion of Congress, and the current political climate, you are free to stop calling yourself a fan and all that entails.
